Tilleda Thunder On Ice “Reed Leupke Day” A Huge Success

RWD Non-Studded feature winner Kasey KolpackBy: Randy Van Hoof Jan. 30, 2010
This was a very special day for a very special family. Reed Leupke is a four year old young MAN that has been diagnosed with leukemia. I say a young MAN because he is handling all this with great courage. A lot of adults could learn a lesson from this little guy! With our highest car count of the season with drivers coming over from Lake Du Bay and one driver coming all the way from the Madison area we had thirty seven cars in the pit area. With the help of all the drivers, fans and fifteen special drivers we were able to raise over $900.00 for the Leupke Family, you all deserve a big pat on the back for that! Only four “media” people showed up to race so we put them in with the dirt drivers and the asphalt drivers and that special race was won by non other that regular IMCA Modified driver and champion, Jared Siefert.

FWD Non-Studded feature winner B.J. Giese four in a rowSix FWD studded racers took the green flag for the opening feature of the day. This race was run flag to flag with no cautions as all the features were. Points leaders Daryl Erickson and Clint Forstner started at the rear. Patrick Wassenberg jumped out to an early start but on lap four contact with the 8 of Tony Everhart caused a cut tire and he got his way into the infield as Everhart took the point. But a few laps later the pair that started at the tail worked their way to the front with Forstner taking the lead with Erickson in tow. At the checkers it was “Chucky” picking up feature win for three in a row.

Special Race Winner Jared Siefert in the number one wagonRWD Non-Studded class rolled track side with the full field of fourteen cars. This feature would come down to the final turn on the final lap to determine the winner. This class is the most exciting class to watch from week to week. Early on Kasey Kolpack took the lead as Clint “Chuck” Forstner worked his way up to his rear bumper from mid-pack. Lap five Clint found his way by Kolpack with Dan Michonski working his way into the third spot. Two laps later Forstner would also succumb to a failed tire and had to watch the remainder of the laps from the infield handing the lead back to Kolpack for a lap. Then it was D. Michonski’s turn at the point but Kolpack would not let him run away, not today. Taking the white flag Kolpack was rubbing the chrome off Michonski’s rear bumper. Coming out of turn four for the checkers a little tap from Kasey got Dan a little out of shape and with the lapped car of Pete Forstner on the outside, Dan slip up and those to made contact and Pete worked him hard across the track into the inside bank. As this was going on Kolpack found his way by on the outside and beat Dan to the line by less than a car length to pick up his first ever feature win.

Our largest field of FWD Non-Studded cars with eighteen drivers taking the green. With the 40 of Cody Bierman and the 13 of Josh Jolitz leading them to the green. After lap one it was Bierman leading with Matt Skarzynski in his 27 moving up to the second spot. By lap three Skarzynski was at the point. But deeper in the pack the points leader B.J. Giese was battling his way through traffic. A close call on lap eight almost ended his day as he was forced way high coming out of turn four, but was able to get it back to the preferred groove. With five to go Giese was able to pick his way around Skarzynski to take the lead and hold on for his fourth feature win of the season. If you are keeping count, that is all the features so far this season!

Racing continues every Saturday at 1:00pm through February.
