RWD Studded driver 41 Craig Wildenberg gets the preferred line on Mike Schmidt in turns one and twoBy: Randy Van Hoof
Tilleda Thunder On Ice Week 4 felt like a nice warm spring day after the very cold week last week. It was a very competitive day especially in the RWDNS class as another Michonski found his way to victory lane.
The Outlaw Studded class was up first and with only 2 cars running this week and only 1 FWD studded car in the pits they ran together with the 35Q of Calvin Stueck getting points for his class. The 41 of Craig Wildenberg started inside and the 07 of Mike Schmidt for the 15 lap shootout while Stueck started shotgun on the field. Wildenberg led from the start and never looked back. Schmidt made it interesting during the race as he was able get to Wildenberg’s rear bumper a few times but Craig was up to the challenges and took his second feature win of the season.
21 Tony Wudstrack and David Rindt in the 39 battle for a spot during RWD non-studded actionRWD Non-Studded Class was second on the bill today. With 17 cars taking to the ice it makes for a very challenging race for the points leaders as they are lined up in the rear of the field. David Rindt in his 39 car leads the field to the green. Kasey Kolpack in the 41 takes an early lead and then loops his car in three & four and hands the lead to the 22 of Eddie Jung. The Michonski brothers were heating it up through the pack after starting in the rear. On lap 7 Dan Michonski catches and passes Jung for the lead. All three of the Michonski’s were running together for part of the race till Ben in the 10 spins in turn one and stalls his car. The red flag came out as he was sitting right in the groove. A few laps after the re-start Al Danielson in the 91 running his first race of the season with us spins and brings out the red flag as his driver door is facing traffic. Now with the field bunched up behind him D. Michonski has to use all the throttle control he can and not make any mistakes with only six laps to go. With 4 laps to go the 64 of Clint Forstner starts to put some pressure on the leader letting the rest of the field to battle each other for the leftovers. When the double checkers waved it was D. Michonski getting the win, Forstner in second, Danielson ended up third, N. Michonski fourth and Kolpack rounding out the top five.
61 John Babino gets an early lead on Carl King in the 82k during the FWD non-studded feature actionFive competitors took to the ice in their FWD non-studded racers for the final feature of the day. Greg Gutt in the 20 made a quick move on the outside to take the lead after the first lap as the 82K of Carl King started on the pole. After the first lap it was Gutt, Grall in the 6 and King back to third. Jeff Jolitz in the 1 was siphoning his way through the pack to take the second spot from Grall with five laps to go. It was a little to late for Jolitz as Gutt held on for the win, his third of the season followed by Jolitz, Grall, Babino in the 61 and King rounding out the field.
Racing will resume next Saturday at 1:00 and run through February with a “special” two day race scheduled for March 7th and 8th, ice permitting.
