Mark Mackesy clinched the State Park Speedway 2011 C-Tech Super Late Model Championship Friday night and did so by finding Buffalo Wild Wings Victory Lane for the fourth time this year. "To win the championship is an awesome feeling," says Mackesy, "I have great guys who help me in the shop and awesome sponsors who make it all possible. Last year I didn't win a race here and to win the point title this year, with such great competition every week, is special."
Mackesy had to work hard for his fourth victory of 2011. After setting fast time, the 12 car started 12th with the inversion for the Pepsi 75.
Frank Kreyer and Mark Eswein started on the front row and it was Kreyer who jumped out to the early lead. Just five laps in to the race, the caution flew, and Eswein took advantage of the restart grabbing the lead from Kreyer.
Ben Pettis followed suit, moving past Kreyer and in to second with Cardell Potter right behind him who slid into the third position.
Just under 20 laps in to the Pepsi 75 Potter made his move for second, looking inside the 7-11 of Pettis. The two raced side by side for two laps, when Potter cleared for the position.
As Eswein stretched his lead on the field, Mackesy worked his way to the front. With 55 laps to go he made his way from 12th to fifth and in the next six laps used the inside groove to move past Tim Sauter and Jason Weinkauf, and in to third.
The caution flew with 44 laps to go when three cars were involved in a pile-up on the frontstretch.
Eswein got a good restart and grabbed the lead again. Sauter tried to make the outside lane work from the fourth spot and looked to move up in to second, but was unable to make it stick, and settled back in to the fourth position, with Potter second and Mackesy third.
With 26 laps to go Mackesy made his move inside Potter for the second spot and had no trouble taking it. A caution give laps later bunched up the field and put Mackesy alongside Eswein on the restart.
Eswein picked the inside lane, but Mackesy has been good on the high side all year long and the 12 car cleared for the lead with 20 laps to go.
While Mackesy stretched his lead, there was still plenty of racing going on behind him. Tucker Miller was working his way through the field and with 16 to go worked his way around Weinkauf and Sauter to move in to the fouth position.
A restart with two laps to go didn't change much, Mackesy held off Eswein for his fourth victory of 2011. Potter and Miller earned their best finishes of the season, finishing third and fourth respectively, while Neil Knoblock had a late charge and rounded out the top five.
Cole Yach took the early lead in the Super Stock Feature and held that spot until the caution flew with three laps to go. With Lyle Nowak to his outside and Ryan Hinner behind him, Yach grabbed the lead again, but the 05 got loose coming out of turn four for the final time, opening up the bottom for Hinner. Hinner dove inside, Nowak looked outside and Yach tried to hold on to his racecar. Hinner and Yach made contact right before the line sending Yach in to the wall as he crossed the line and allowing Hinner to cross first by a nose. That marks Hinner's second straight trip to Buffalo Wild Wings Victory Lane and give him an 11 point lead in the overall standings.
Kyle Gennett also made his second straight trip to Buffalo Wild Wings Victory Lane, taking the checkered flag in the Pure Stock Feature. Gennett took the lead from James Annala with 16 laps to go.
Previous Snap-On Mini-Mod point leader Adam Eckes broke his leg in the past week and is done for the year. Fast qualified Chad Dietsche worked his way through the field to take the lead with nine laps to go and find his way to Buffalo Wild Wings Victory Lane. Dale Louze finished second, Mariah Gajewski third, and Phil Malouf fourth. Malouf takes over the point lead, but leads Dietche by just one point going in to the final race next Thursday.
