Morris, IL, July 4 – Mark Fogel of West Bend, WI, scored his second Midwest Enduro Stock Car Series win of the season during the running of the "FAIRTIME 250" enduro held at the Grundy County Speedway. Fogel led most of the 250-lap event.
Fogel was the overall winner and first in the "A" Class over Darryl Traber. First in the "B" Class was Mike Watson over Jason Lange.
Defending Small Car Series champion Mark Johler collected his second consecutive win of the season during the running of the “FAIRTIME 125” enduro. Mike Jucius finished in the runner up position. Julie Hayes was the winner in the V-6 division over Brad Bahr.
The evening started with the running of the Olson’s Auto / Scrap Metal Recycling sponsored "FAIRTIME 15" powder puff event. Tanya Galloway was the winner of the event over Brenda DeYoung. Galloway lapped the entire field as the track was very slick after the rain that fell during the entire afternoon.
The top five in each class received plaque awards plus prize money. The awards were courtesy of Olson’s Auto / Scrap Metal Recycling of Seneca.
SMALL CAR & V-6 SERIES
The start of the "FAIRTIME 125" Midwest Enduro Small Car & V-6 Series event was going to be exciting as the field was let go on the wet and slick 1/3 mile paved oval. Most of the drivers opted for the high groove around the speedway. This was the best traction early in the event. Jasper Drengler led the first go around with Steve Bayer and Dylan Helfenstein close behind. Helfenstein went in to the pit area for repairs on lap 5 as Jucius motored on by in his Saturn wagon. At the 25-lap marker Jucius was the race leader followed by Alex Clubb, Johler, Bayer and Drengler to round out the top five. Jucius continued to drive the high line and dominate the field as he nearly had the entire field lapped by lap 50. As the field moved to the lap 75 marker the only cars on the lead lap were Jucius, Johler and Clubb. The real battle was for second at this point as Clubb and Johler would trade the runner up spot several times for at least 20 laps. As the track was beginning to dry, Johler and Clubb were on the move as they were only ten seconds behind the leader at lap 100. With 25 to go, Johler showed his championship strength as he found a fast groove in the middle of the track and quickly cut in to Jucius’s margin. Johler caught Jucius at the lap 113 marker at the same time Clubb went to the pit area to change a flat. Johler took command one lap later and held a two-second advantage over Jucius at the line to take the win. Next to follow were Drengler, current point leader Dan Chapman and Helfenstein to round out the top five.
STOCK CAR SERIES
The track surface at the beginning of the "FAIRTIME 250" Midwest Enduro Stock Car Series main event was still slick but was starting to shape up as another lightening fast event. Don Lunsford quickly took an early lead but was passed by Mike Herwald as Lunsford slowed with a flat tire. Herwald then took command of the 250-lap event with Tom DeYoung and Erich Iversen in tow. The field came to a halt at lap 5 to remove Desiree Arnold out of her disabled car as it was stuck in the infield mud. Iversen went to the pit area to change a flat on lap 25 as Fogel moved in to contention in the runner up position. The rest of the top five at this point were DeYoung, Brad Jones and Gerry Galloway. Fogel went past Herwald at the lap 30 marker and started to pull away from the rest of the field. By lap 40, Fogel was ten seconds ahead of Herwald. DeYoung went in to the pit area at lap 41 as Traber caught Herwald and passed for the runner up position at lap 45. The red flag flew once again at the lap 51 marker as Herwald totaled his ’85 Monte Carlo on the front stretch wall after blowing a tire and running over a slick part of the speedway. Herwald was not injured but was through for the day. As the field was nearing the first of three mandatory pit stops at lap 65, Iversen was collected by Tom Barnharst at lap 61 and forced hard in the turn four wall, breaking the rear axle off his ’73 Monte Carlo. This produced a red flag once again. Iversen was not injured. The top five at the break were Fogel, Galloway, Traber, Mark Tomasi and Jay LeBrun. Fogel, Galloway and Traber were the only cars on the lead lap.
After the break, Fogel started to break away from the field once again retaining a solid eleven-second advantage over Galloway at lap 75. Traber passed Galloway at lap 80 for the runner up position. Traber was starting to close the gap on Fogel as Galloway began to fade. At lap 100 Traber was eight seconds behind the leader and as Fogel led the field to the second pit stop at lap 131, he held a three-second lead over Traber. The rest of the top five at the break were Galloway, Jeff Jeras and LeBrun.
As the field reduced due to attrition, the speed and intensity grew. Jeras did not return after the break and was apparently through for the day with mechanical problems. Fogel pulled out in front once again with Traber in second. The red flag flew once again on lap 159 for Arnold as she lost control and hit the front stretch wall head on. She was not injured. Fogel held a ten-second advantage over Traber at this point. The field was slowed for the last red flag of the day on lap 177 for a tire that came off Tomasi’s car. Tomasi did not return. As the field slowed for the final pit stop on lap 191, the top five were Fogel, Traber, Galloway, LeBrun and Tom Ruh.
The final 58 laps looked as though it was going to be very exciting not only for the race win but for third place as well. Fogel pulled out in front with Traber four seconds behind. Le Brun got by Galloway right away on the restart for third. The yellow flag came out for Arnold one more time at lap 207 as she blocked the turn 1 exit after getting tangled with Gerald Hayes. The event ran caution free for the remainder of the event with Fogel taking the win over Traber by a four-second margin at the line. The top five were Fogel, Traber, LeBrun, Galloway and Ruh.
