Loos Tops Rice Lake Speedway Little Dream Race

By Ed Reichert
Rice Lake WI, September 5 – For the first time ever in the long history of the event, the Little Dream race at the Rice Lake Speedway, where fan contributions help raise the overall pay as well as the winners share, was run for the benefit of the Midwest Modifieds instead of the Street Stocks and Jared Loos of Loyal was the winner. Along with that headline race, other winners on the final night of the 2009 racing season included Kevin Adams, Shane Kisling, Simon Wahlstrom and George Richards.

Loos survived intense pressure from Jason Zdroik to win the Midwest Modified feature race in a battle that wasn’t settled until the final lap.
Loos started on the pole and led the first few laps but he gave up the lead after a lap three restart when Zdroik went to the high side of the track and powered around Jared to take over the lead. Zdroik maintained the lead for a few laps himself, but Loos moved back in to challenge him for the lead. Meanwhile, Jesse Glenz, Shane Halopka and Clark Swartz were battling for positions behind the lead duo.

Loos was able to regain the top spot in a turn two pass but Zdroik wouldn’t go away as he continued to ride the cushion and remain within a couple of car lengths of the leader. Zdroik made one last strong push and pulled up beside Loos with five laps to go, but Jared was able to fight him off and while Zdroik continued to pressure, Loos maintained his line and drove home the winner by two car lengths. Halopka made a late charge to take the third spot as he got past Glenz while Ryan Viltz cracked the top five in the last few laps too. With fan contributions, Loos took home $1,171 for his win.

Adams made sure he didn’t let a feature race slip away from himself like he did last night, as he led the entire distance to record the win in the Modified main event. He started on the outside pole, took an immediate lead and never allowed anyone to get too close to him. While Adams had his way out front, there was a great battle for the second spot as Jerry Weigel and Luke Schilling ran side by side for nearly the entire event while Keith Tourville searched for a way past both of them.

As Adams worked through traffic, Weigel and Schilling continued their battle with Schilling edging past on the inside in the late going. A spin forced a yellow with only three laps to go, but Adams wasn’t about to let the competition have a shot at him as he drove away from the field again right to the checkered flag. Schilling and Weigel continued their battle with Schilling holding on by the barest of margins. Mark Hanson used a great restart to get past Tourville for fourth and that’s how they finished.

Kisling used a late race charge to overhaul Eric Olson and take the Super Stock feature. Jeff Heintz and Jim Harris shared the front row but the first lap was a wild scramble that saw Olson make a brilliant move to come from the second row and take the lead before the first lap was completed. Olson immediately started to build up an advantage as Kisling began to move up himself along with Tim Borgeson and Cory Davis. Kisling was able to take over second from Heintz and he then set off after Olson, who had opened up a considerable lead by that time. Kisling tried the high side and it worked for awhile but he then dropped lower on the track with Olson still maintaining a strong lead.

The yellow flew with ten laps left which bunched up the field on the only slowdown of the race. Olson continued to run strongly on the green as Kisling struggled to stay with him. Again Shane tried the high side and this time it worked as he immediately began to cut into Olson’s lead. Getting a great run off the corners, Kisling closed up beside Olson with just a few laps left and he powered past Eric to take over the lead with only two laps remaining. Shane stretched his margin by another car length as he drove home for the thrilling win. Rookie Heintz had a strong run as he finished third with Borgeson and Shawn Huse completing the top five.

The nonstop Street Stock feature saw a stunning upset as rookie Simon Wahlstrom led all the way for his first win ever in the division. Wahlstrom started on the outside pole and got the early jump on Danny Richards for the lead. Richards tried to fight back and take over the lead but he spun in turn two. Richards was able to keep the car running and the race stayed under the green, but the rest of the pack had to scramble to avoid Richards, and this gave Wahlstrom the opportunity to build up a good working margin. Jared Lindner was able to fight his way past Jay Kesan to take over second and he set out after the leading Wahlstrom. Ron Hanestad was also on the move as he tried to chase down Lindner.

Meanwhile, while all this was going on, Wahlstrom continued to make good laps and to hold on to his lead. Lindner and Hanestad both tried to catch Wahlstrom but there was no keeping him from victory lane as he drove home for the win. Doug Wojcik completed a strong run up through the field as he edged past Rugg Lindner on the final lap for fourth.

Richards added another win to his impressive Pure Stock totals as he fought off the early challenges of Joel Hinrichs and then gradually built up a comfortable lead. In the early going though, the leaders raced side by side for several laps until Richards was finally able to creep away from the field. The Browns also had quite a stirring fight before Darwin moved into the third spot ahead of his nephew Dusty. Tyler Wahlstrom gave up a few spots early but fought his way back up through the field to complete the top five.
