Champions TJ Luedke, Russ Scheffler, Brian Gilles, and Brad Ruh Crowned on Chilly Night in Manitowoc

By Kathy Tienor
After Mother Nature decided to foil EWSC yet one more time on Friday night, the pits and grandstands were crowded for the final night of racing for 2010. Doug’s Skipper Inn was the nightly sponsor, with Tyler Bein the trophy sponsor, and 2 bikes being given away to the youngsters by the Activities committee. The bikes were sponsored by Brickner / Wenzel Racing and Minster Racing. Also on tap was the Dice Roll Cash Giveaway for the Feature winners, an extra $1200 provided by Hagar Nelson.

The EWSC 360 Sprintcar presented by Bud Light rolled onto the track for the A Main with 3 drivers still having legitimate shots at claiming the title. Randy Call (New Berlin) and Terry Marten (Sheboygan Falls) led the field, followed by Ben Schmidt (Plymouth) and Lance Thompson, and Russ Wetemkamp (Newton) and TJ Luedke (Plymouth). Marten grabbed the lead as the field took the green with Schmidt, Call, Thompson and Luedke in tow. Several drivers were making moves from deeper in the pack, including Scotty Thiel (Sheboygan), Robbie Pribnow, and Kurt Davis (West Allis). Schmidt finally caught and passed Marten on Lap 12 for the lead, with Luedke third, Lance Fassbender (Burnett) fourth, and Danny Schlafer (Sussex) fifth. The only caution of the race flew on Lap 16 for Danny Schlafer suffering a flat on the frontstretch. On the restart it was Schmidt, followed by Luedke, Marten, Fassbender, Pribnow, and Davis. The race ran to checkers without any more incidents, with Schmidt holding off a charging Luedke for the win, third was Thiel, then Davis, Marten, Brian Kristan (Zion, IL.), Robbie Pribnow, Fassbender, Call, and Danny Schlafer who after replacing the flat tire battled his way all the back through the field. Hard Chargers for the race were Thiel and Pribnow both passing 11 cars, Davis with 7, and Luedke and Jeremy Schultz (Beaver Dam) with 4 each.

In the only B Main action of the evening, Jay Riemer (Sheboygan Falls) suffered a nasty flip on the first turn of the first lap, bringing out a lengthy red flag. Reimer was ok, but finished for the evening. The race was slowed by 2 more cautions for spins. Advancing to the A were Tony Wondra (Campbellsport), Pribnow, Schultz, Al Schlafer (Sussex), Brandon McMullen (Plymouth), and Doug Wondra (Oakfield).

At the midway point of the race it was Rick, Schmidt, Russ Scheffler (Sussex), Stroika, Craig Schueffner (Sheboygan Falls), and Carlson. Billy Rezutek (Big Bend) and Russ Scheffler were the big movers in the pack. Scheffler led the remainder of the race, and was followed across the line by Russ, Schmidt, Stroika, Schueffner, Rezutek, Randy Markwardt (Sheboygan), Pete Parker (Kaukauna), Carlson, and Doulhoun Sr. Hard chargers for the race were Rezutek and Russ Scheffler with 9 cars each, Schueffner and Markwardt with 7, and Rick with 5.

The EWSC Grand National A Main took their swing at besting the track, rolling out with TJ Smith and Matt Jackson on the front row, Brian Monday and Brett Wenzel (Manitowoc), Brad Lubach and Logan Rhode. A yellow flew before 1 completed lap as Nathan Wegner spun in Turn 1. On Lap 2 another caution for Travis Grolle (Two Rivers). The restart came with Jackson in the lead, Wenzel, Rhode, Smith and Monday. Rhode passed Jackson for the lead on Lap 3, and was passed by Wenzel for the lead himself on Lap 6. At the halfway point another solo spin by Wegner invoked the 2 spin rule for him and he was disqualified from the race on the caution. The restart had Wenzel in the lead, followed by Rhode, Gilles, Matt Vetting (Manitowoc), Lubach, and Ben Stumpf (Brillion). The final yellow flag flew on Lap 12 for a spin by Monday, and the lineup was Wenzel, Gilles, Rhode, Lubach, Ben, and Vetting for the final run to the checkers. A lot of passing mid-pack in the final few laps resulted in some great racing. At the checkers, Wenzel took the victory, followed by Ben Stumpf, Gilles, Rhode, Lubach, Vetting, Grolle, Smith, Jackson, and Alex Stumpf. Hard chargers in the Grand National Division were Jason Winkler (Howards Grove) and Keith Schommer with 11 cars, Ben Stumpf and Gilles with 7 each, and Vetting with 5.

At lap 4 Resch was passed by Kevin Naidl (Cato), who would hold on to the lead to eventually win the race.
