Road Trip To Charter Raceway Park Puts Olson Back In Victory Lane

By John Wiedemann
Beaver Dam, WI - July 7, 2009 - A two and a half hour road trip to race at Charter Raceway Park on Tuesday night netted Tyler Olson his first win in three years.

Also in victory lane tonight was Shelby Grunst, Little Miss Beaver Dam Lake and sister to Box Stock driver Trevor Grunst. Shelby handed out trophies and posed for victory lane photos with all the winners for the evening.

Even though he won both of the Briggs Junior/Animal 3 heat races, Tyler Olson really wanted to get back in victory lane after a feature race. Starting the feature on the outside of the second row, he knew he would have to work hard to get up front. Caution flags would be abundant in the race that just never seemed to want to get going. After the restart following the initial caution of the race, Olson dropped low exiting turn two and took the second position away from Justin Erickson. A lap later, Olson executed the same exact move, passing Karly Stadler for the lead. Two more caution periods slowed the pace and bunched up the field. On each restart, Olson was able to power away and distance himself from Stadler, Erickson and the rest of the field. With five laps remaining in the race, Erickson passed Stadler on the backstraight for the second spot. As the checkers flew, Olson was all by himself on the straightaway, taking the victory in his first ever visit to the track. Erickson held down second and was followed by Karly Stadler in third.

In Briggs Junior/Animal 2 racing action, Tristan Koenings had a good day. Both Koenings and Wyatt Blashe won their heat races, setting up a great battle for the feature event. The feature would get off to a rough start for both racers as they got their karts hooked together on the first lap and went sliding over the banking in between turns one and two. The race would be restarted from the top following the caution with both drivers improving their starts on the second take. With the first lap completed, Blashe held the lead followed by Koenings. The two raced with less than a kart length between them until lap five when Koenings made his move down low in the third turn and passed Blashe for the lead. Blashe seemed to struggle through the turns and faded back until a caution bunched up the field one final time. With six laps remaining, Blashe tried to make his move on the restart. Koenings was able to hold him off and lead the final laps enroute to the win, his first feature victory in the series. Blashe held on to finish second with Dakota Young scored in third.

Bandon Waelti returned to the series and picked up where he left off when he last raced three weeks ago in the Briggs Heavy division, victory lane. The battle for the top spot in the Briggs Heavy feature seemed to switch almost every lap of the race. Bill Sainsbury held the point early in the race that was slowed by two quick cautions, each for incidents involving Waelti spinning in turn two. When the race was rolling again, Dan Sainsbury had taken the lead from Bill. Two laps later Bill was back up front, but Chad Bogar and Waelti were challenging. With under five laps remaining, racing was tight at the front with Bogar, Bill Sainsbury, Waelti, Benji Huss and Dan Sainsbury running side by side and nose to tail in contention for the lead. As Waelti took the lead for the final time, Chad Bogar pulled off the track with apparent engine issues. Waelti took the checkers and the win, his second victory in as many races in the series. Bill Sainsbury captured second, leaving Huss to finish third and Dan Sainsbury in fourth.

Justin Peterson continued his pattern of winning one week and not winning the next with a victory this week. Peterson grabbed the lead away from Kyle Marten three laps into the main event for the Animal Pro division and led the rest of the caution free race for his fourth win of the season. Marten held on to second with last week's winner, Steve Sainsbury, finishing third followed by Tony Rialson in fourth.

Elijah Koenig continued his strong showings in the Box Stock division with his fourth victory of the year and third feature win in a row. The second year racer swept both heat races and the feature on the evening.

Robby Resch scored the feature victory in the Kids Winged Sprint Car event.
