Sunday's Long John Silver's 200 Set For 5:15 p.m.
NEWTON, Iowa (May 16, 2009) – Iowa native Brett Moffitt turned in the fastest time in Saturday's practice session at Iowa Speedway in advance of Sunday's NASCAR Camping World Series race, the Long John Silver's 200 presented by A&W Restaurants.
Moffitt, from Grimes, Iowa, debuted in the NASCAR Camping World Series East earlier this year by becoming the youngest driver in series history to earn a Coors Light Pole Award. On Saturday the Sunoco Rookie of the Year candidate served noticed that he could be a contender in Sunday's annual combination race between the East and West with a fast lap of 23.847 seconds (132.092 mph) in the No. 44 Karl Chevrolet Chevrolet.
Brian Icker, the defending winner of the Long John Silver's 200, was second fastest in Saturday's 90-minute practice session. The San Diego, Calif., native piloted the No. 15 BrianIckler.com Chevrolet to a fast lap of 24.059 seconds (130.928 mph) in his last run on the track of the day. Ickler also practiced the No. 18 Toyota of Des Moines Toyota for NASCAR Sprint Cup Series driver Kyle Busch. Busch, in Charlotte Saturday for the Sprint All-Star Challenge, is scheduled to arrive at the track in time for Sunday's practice session. Ickler had the No. 18 third on the speed charts early in practice; it wound up 16th overall.
David Mayhew (24.097 seconds/130.722 mph), Jason Bowles (24.146/130.456) and Jeffrey Earnhardt (24.150/130.425) rounded out the top five fastest cars on the track Saturday.
Defending NASCAR Camping World Series West Champion Eric Holmes was eight-fastest on Saturday at 24.276 seconds (129.758 mph) and East Champion Matt Kobyluck was 20th on the charts at 24.480 (128.676).
The Long John Silver's 200 is the third race of the 2009 campaign for the NASCAR Camping World Series East and the fifth of the year for the NASCAR Camping World Series West. The only combination race of the year for the series is set to go green at Iowa Speedway on Sunday at 5:15 p.m.
