Jerry Tunney Seeks to be the 2012 RACE 101 Premier Driver

by Jerry Tunney Racing Media PR
RACE 101, Presented by Howe Racing is an educational and consulting program for the auto racing industry. The program offers yearly scholarships for deserving up and coming race car drivers who are looking to learn and improve themselves and their racing programs. One of these drivers selected for the scholarship program is Jerry Tunney, a sophomore in high school who is barely old enough to drive on public roads. He has been racing since he was nine, most recently in a 500-plus horsepower late model at Mountain Speedway, an asphalt oval in the Pocono Mountains of Pennsylvania. We’ve asked Jerry to give some insight into the RACE 101 program he has been attending throughout 2011.

“The first day was an eye opener” says Tunney “I was amazed at how much I never even thought of since I started racing”. “The biggest lesson this year has been on chassis set-up and tuning, specifically shocks”

Tunney has been traveling to North Carolina throughout the year to do things that wouldn’t be able to be taught on the online classes he also takes almost every other week. “Our online classes back up what we have been taught while at the shop in North Carolina” “Tony (the owner and founder of RACE 101) goes over and adds on to what he’s already taught us in person”

Not only does RACE 101 teach about the race cars, but they also focus on the marketing side of the sport. “Anna and Adam have taught us almost everything we need to know related to marketing” says Tunney. “They have helped me accomplish so much more than I would have had I not been selected to be in the program”. The marketing side of the classes teaches the students the best ways to get their name circulating in the public eye. “One of the biggest things you have to be able to do is market yourself”. “You can be the best race car driver that has ever lived, but if no one knows who you are you will not be going anywhere”.

Race 101 also fields a super late model 'house car' with an outstanding student as the Premier Driver each year. Race 101 students, sponsors, and partners are represented through the program's strong marketing and PR support. “This is the goal of almost everyone in my class”. “To be the premier driver is a huge responsibility, however, RACE 101 is looking for a well rounded driver”. “A driver that can perform on the track, communicate well with the crew chief, and also have a strong suit on the marketing side”. Jerry will find out if he will be the premier driver in early February of 2012 when he returns to North Carolina for the graduation ceremony.
