American Speed Association PR
It may be social media, podcasting, or e-mails. The American Speed Association continuously finds ways to keep its fans, ASA Members, ASA Member Tracks, and Sanctioned Series up to date. With the variety of communication available through the internet, ASA is taking advantage.
This past November, ASA got involved in the social media sites by creating a page on Facebook® and Twitter™. Since each has started, ASA has welcomed over 1,250 followers on Facebook and it grows every day. "We have been using Facebook to notify our Facebook Friends when a new story is posted on the site or when one of our Member Tracks and/or Series informs us of a rainout," Kevin Ramsell, ASA's Director of Public Relations said. "We also have that linked up to Twitter, so it quickly allows us to inform our followers to what is happening. Many use smartphones to get their updates from Facebook and Twitter which helps get the news out immediately."
Facebook and Twitter both have helped get ASA the added exposure they are looking for. They are also taking advantage of the services that YouTube offers as well. "When we did the ASA Free State 500 event in South Africa, we were able to put up daily video diaries to give the fans in the United States an idea of what was happening over there," Ramsell explained. "We saw very positive results and now we are expanding that by creating videos featuring our Member Tracks and Series. Quick videos that will give the fans and other tracks/series as well, an idea of what the racing is like there. Hopefully, by visually showing them, it will increase their interest to visit the track and become a regular visitor."
Now ASA is looking at using another medium to help promote its Member Tracks and Series, through internet radio and podcasting. "Over the last few months, we have been trying out the idea of a live internet radio show," Ramsell said. "We started with a weekly Monday night show and still working on how to improve that. We are also looking at doing some live internet radio shows specific to tech talk and promoters roundtables. After these shows are aired live, they may be posted as Podcasts on iTunes where race fans can download the broadcasts to listen on their iPods or MP3 players whenever they want."
The best part about these Internet sites is that cost is free or have a low monthly fee, and many have no limit to how much data you can put on the sites either. ASA is currently testing the capability of sending RSS Feeds to those who use that to get the latest news.
"The internet has become our modern way of communication," Dennis Huth, ASA President said. "Over the last six months, our PR Department has looked at the different opportunities available for us to use. So far we are seeing positive results as our website traffic continues to increase along with the number of followers on Facebook, Twitter and others. These sites also give a sense of community where not only can they see and read the latest news, but they can also discuss it among each other as well. We see this with our internet radio shows and I think we will see the interest grow and that will help ASA grow as a whole."
