It was the Tuesday after Memorial Day, as dumpster after dumpster roared from Dells Raceway Park, overflowing with a wide variety of shrapnel. Remnants of cars, travel trailers, boats (yes, boats) and even a stray toilet bounced precariously at the top of the pile. If you didn’t know any better, you’d think that the entire facility had been demolished, but thankfully, it was nothing more than the remnants of a great time.
Memorial Day and Labor Day are fast becoming days of distinction at Dells Raceway Park. For the second year running, fans have been treated to an innovative collection of thrill and destruction events dubbed “Memorial Day Mayhem” and “Labor Day of Doom”. “These events are tough to produce, but a lot of of fun” said Race Director Scott Sauerbrei “and judging by the record crowds, we’re doing something right”. DRP reported that well over 3,000 fans enjoyed the most recent show, co-produced by Manthey Salvage of Mauston, WI.
Rollover Contest? Check. Trailer Races? Check. School Bus Races (all 20 of them)? Check. Skid Car Races? Check. What’s the hardest part of producing the show? “Cleanup!” said Scott, “But building our stable of participants is gradual and we are recruiting heavily for new folks who want to have some real fun every year”.
If you are interested in participating in future events, contact the DRP office at 608-253-7223 or email them at info@dellsracewaypark.com. No experience is necessary, and DRP will provide all information needed to get you started.
“Labor Day is right around the corner” said Scott “and I am hearing rumors of boat races. If you think watching was fun, being part of the show is a thrill you’ll never forget!”.
