Schultz scores Late Model win at Columbus 151

May 28, 1999; Columbus, WI. - Dean Schultz of Juneau captured the thirty-five lap late model feature Friday night at the Columbus 151 Speedway on Sherman's Garage and Body Shop Night. Shultz used the outside groove to move up from his sixth row starting position to race to his first win of the season.

He is the fourth different winner in the four events held this season. Rick Nelson of Deerfield drove to second. Mike Langsdorf of Doylestown moved into the season point standings lead with a third place finish. Randy Breunig of Columbus crossed the line in fourth. Scott Patrick of Dousman recovered from an early race incident with an impressive drive to a fifth place finish.

Dan Howard of Baraboo charged from the sixth row and wrestled the lead away from Scott Ascher of Sussex with only one lap remaining to score his first win of the season in the twenty-five lap street stock feature. Howard is also the fourth driver to win a feature in the four events held to date. Ascher, in his first appearance at the speedway, finished second. Karl Wahigren of Cross Plains drove a strong race to take third. Ron Preskar of Juneau moved up from the seventh row to finish in fourth. Rick Coppernoll of Marshall followed in fifth.

Dennis Gaserude of Oregon inherited the lead when Grant Lindner of Poynette gave up the top spot on lap twelve, retiring to the pits with mechanical problems. Gaserude went on to record his first win of the season and is also the fourth different winner in the division this season. Chuck Egli of Waterloo drove well to finish second. Dan Schmidt of Watertown followed in third ahead of Mike Goeman Jr. of Hartford. Fifth went to Lincoln Keeser of Jefferson.
Rick Verdon of Fitchburg drove to victory in the back up division race. Bruce Havel of Deerfield came on strong at the end to finish in second. Dave Moore of McFarland was third.
Scott Patrick led the late model division in qualifying turning a lap in 13.511 seconds. The street stock division was led by Ron Preskar at 14.252. Gerry Junget of Rio was quick in the hobby stock division at 15.575.

Late model heat race wins were registered by Al Weishoff of Otsego, Patrick Dwyer of Monona and John Lamberty. Street stock heat race victories went to Scott Dolphin of Madison, Fred Strobel of Hartford, Dan Howard and Karl Wahlgren. Hobby stock heat race action saw Dan Schmidt and Grant Lindner take top honors in their heats.
The late model semi-feature win was taken by Al Weishoff. Mike Kolb of Wauwatosa drove to second. Bill Drefahl of Evansville was third. Scott Dolphin outraced Ken Morris of Madison and John Schafer of Monona to capture the street stock semi-feature.
In the Ad World spectator races, Bob Rabo of Madison took top honors in the four cylinder division. Wayne Ninnemann of Fort Atkinson was victorious in the six cylinder class. The eight cylinder division win went to Chris Rowley of Cottage Grove.
Racing resumes this Friday Night at the Columbus 151 Speedway with a full program of late mode, street stock, hobby stock and backup racing. Junior Motorsports will also be on hand. The B.J.'s Roadside Rollover Contest will wind down the evening.
