Six classes take to track at Columbus 151
Speedway 2000 Season Opener!

April 30, 2000; Columbus, WI. - The season opener of the 2000 racing season took place at the Columbus 151 Speedway on Sunday afternoon April 30. Six divisions took part in the program that provided plenty of entertainment for the fans.
Scott Nottestad of Cambridge moved up from the sixth row to slip by John Acker of Spring Green with one lap remaining to record the win in the thirty-five lap late model feature. Acker had led from the start and held off the challenges of Terry Sauer of Waterloo and Mike Langsdorf of Doylestown much of the way before Nottestad found the outside groove to his liking. Once past Sauer and Langsdorf, Nottestad went to work on Acker before making the pass with one lap to go. Acker held on for second followed by Langsdorf. Sauer came across the line in fourth. Al Weishoff of Otsego drove from the seventh row to finish fifth.
In the twenty-five lap street stock feature, Ron Preskar of Juneau worked his way through traffic from the seventh row and went on to score the win in the caution free event. Ron Schmitt of Jackson followed closely behind in second ahead of Dave Oswald of Cottage Grove. Rick Coppernoll of Marshall took fourth. Mark DePorter of Fort Atkinson was fifth.
Grant Lindner of Poynette moved up quickly and was able to handle lap traffic to race to the win in the twenty lap hobby stock feature. Ken Scott of Rio came from back in the pack to finish in second. Dennis Gaserude of Oregon followed in third ahead of Jerry Chapman of Juneau. Jason Hibner of Pardeeville was fifth.
Ron Schneidewind of Madison took over the lead at the halfway point and went on to capture the eight lap back up car event. Mark Remsik of Deerfield came on strong to finish in second. Rick Verdon of Fitchburg was third.
Ben Kreyer of Poynette drove past Brian Shonasky of Wyocena in the closing laps to capture the fifteen lap Junior Motorsports feature. Denver Lapacek of Madison followed in third. Steve Hustad of Arlington crossed the line in fourth ahead of Lee Kreyer of Stanchfield, MN.
Steve Lemke of Villa Park, IL. was victorious in the Pro division feature of the Formula Indy Racing Association. Anthony Wallace took the checkered in the Pro-Am division feature.
Fast times for the afternoon were turned in by Al Weishoff in the late model division at 13.756, Ron Preskar in the street stocks at 14.577 and Ken Scott in the hobby stock division at 15.358. Jamie Moll of Madison set a new track record in Junior Motorsports at 16.398. Steve Lemke set a new track in the Formula Indy cars at 13.510.
Late model heat race wins were registered by Will Godding of Cross Plains, John Acker and John Ovadahl Jr. of Helenville. Fred Strobel of Hartford and Ron Schmitt were victorious in the street stock heats. Dennis Gaserude and Jason Hibner claimed the hobby stock heats. Junior Motorsports heat wins were recorded by Jim Long of Rio and Jamie Moll. Steve Hustad took the Junior Motorsports dash. Formula Indy heat wins went to Neil Gillentine of Sugar Grove, IL. and Dirk Walker of Madison.
Racing action continues this Friday night at the Columbus 151 Speedway with WIBA 101.5 Night. In addition to a full program of late model, street stock, hobby stock and back up racing, the Formula Indy Racing Association will see action. Also on the schedule is the first B.J.s Roadside Rollover Contest of the season.
