Weishoff tops Cherry Bomb 50!
By Dennis Thompson

June 30, 2000; Columbus, WI. -  Cherry Bomb 50 Night provided plenty of high-powered action Friday night at the Columbus 151 Speedway. When it was all said and done it was Al Weishoff of Otsego in the late models, R.C. Coppernoll of Columbus in the street stocks, Bret Schmidt of Watertown in the hobby stocks and Ron Schneidewind of Madison in the back ups that made it to victory lane with feature wins.

Butch Mierendorf of Lake Mills grabbed the lead at the start of the fifty-lap late model feature followed closely by Bill Retallick of Marshall. The first caution of the event came early as John Acker of Spring Green made contact with Bart Reinen of Jefferson and several cars became involved in the ensuing scramble.

Stacking them up!   Not everyone had their evening go as planned in Late Model feature action.   Here several cars get together causing a caution period. 63000b.jpg (14663 bytes)

Mierendorf led on the restart with Retallick and Brent Knight of Watertown in hot pursuit. Rob Retallick of Marshall had trouble going into turn one and made contact with a couple of other cars setting off a multi car crash. Will Godding of Cross Plains was transported to the Columbus hospital with a hand injury.

When racing action resumed, Mierendorf continued to lead. Al Weishoff of Otsego, who started in the sixth row, moved to the outside groove and began to work his way to the front. On lap thirty-eight, Weishoff slipped into second and began his quest for the top spot. Weishoff quickly cut into the lead held by Mierendorf and began to challenge for the position. As Mierendorf and Weishoff moved in on traffic on lap forty-five, John Acker was involved in an incident with current point leader Dean Schultz of Juneau and Bart Reinen. Mierendorf tried to slip by low but couldn’t avoid making contact.

R.C. Coppernoll (#36) took advantage of an accident which gave him the lead in Street Stock feature action, he then held on for the win.

Damage was severe and Mierendorf was out of the race. Weishoff assumed command of the lead for the restart and went on to his first win of the season. He is the eighth different driver to win a feature in the division this season. Bill Retallick finished in second ahead of Brent Knight. Scott Nottestad of Cambridge came on strong and drove to fourth. Don Gaserude of Fort Atkinson was fifth.

Ron Preskar of Juneau appeared to be on his way to a clean sweep by racing from his seventh row starting position to take the lead on lap twenty-two of the thirty lap street stock feature. However disaster struck on lap twenty-eight when Chuck Egli of Waterloo lost a wheel coming out of turn four and onto the front straight. Preskar was fast approaching and while trying to take evasive action slammed hard into the infield tires ending his night.

Fortunately, Preskar was not injured in the incident. That set up the wild two lap dash to the checkered with Tom Collins of Lake Mills out in front followed by R.C. Coppernoll, Shane Radtke of Helenville and Ron Schmitt of Jackson. The action was fierce for the final two laps as drivers traded positions and raced three wide at times. As the field crossed the line on lap thirty, it was R.C. Coppernoll picking up his first feature win. Coppernoll is the sixth different driver to win a feature in the division this season. Shane Radtke claimed the second spot. Ron Schmitt followed in third. Tom Collins ended up in fourth ahead of Ron Coppernoll of Madison.

Bret Schmidt took over the lead on lap seven and went on to his first win of the season in the twenty-five lap hobby stock feature. Schmidt is the sixth different feature winner in the division this season. Justin Schultz of Rio had his best race of the year finishing in second. Andy Junget of Rio drove to third ahead of Dennis Gaserude of Oregon. Jason Hibner of Pardeeville was fifth.

Ron Schneidewind scored a thrilling last lap win over Jim Remsik of DeForest and Rick Verdon of Fitchburg. Schneidewind’s third win of the season allowed him to take over the point lead in the division.

Fast times for the evening were turned in by Andy Tomlinson of Poynette in the late models at 13.845, Ron Preskar in the street stocks at 14.667 and Dennis Gaserude in the hobby stocks at 15.556.

Late model heat race wins were registered by Jeff Falbe of Beaver Dam, Bill Retallick and John Acker. Street stock heat race victories went to Chuck Egli, John Schafer of Monona and Ron Preskar. Gilbert Valdez of Madison and Dennis Gaserude recorded the hobby stock heat wins.

Ad World spectator races were won by Dale Chitek of DeForest in the four cylinder class, Tom Pfeifer of Fort Atkinson in the six cylinder class and Chris Rowley of Cottage Grove in the eight cylinder class.

Racing action continues this Friday night at the Columbus 151 Speedway with Burger King Jr. Fan Club Night. In addition to a full program of racing there will be a coloring contest for kids and big wheel races for kids age groups 3-4, 5-6 and 7-8.
