Breunig tops round two of the Pepsi
Triple 60's Challenge!! July 14, 2000; Columbus, WI. - In a reverse of finishing positions from round one, Randy Breunig of Columbus held off the late challenges of Jason Erickson of Cambridge to capture the 60-lap late model Pepsi Triple 60s Challenge Series feature at the Columbus 151 Speedway on Friday night.
Duane Deppe of Waterloo raced into the lead at the start of the event. Russ Goodwin of Beloit followed in close pursuit. The pair moved out to a several car length lead as the rest of the pack battled fiercely for position. On lap twenty-one the engine let loose on Goodwins car dumping fluid onto the track as he entered turn three. With no time to react the rest of the field drove hard into the slick turn resulting in a multi-car crash. Brent Knight of Watertown complained of shoulder pain and was transported to the Columbus hospital. On the restart, Deppe once again led the field. The charge from cars back in the pack continued with Randy Breunig, Andy Tomlinson of Poynette, Al Weishoff of Otsego and Dean Schultz of Juneau all moving up. Also involved in the scramble was Terry Sauer of Waterloo. Tomlinson moved into second tightly followed by the rest of the pack. On lap thirty-six with Deppe trying to hold onto the lead, he suddenly slowed as he came down the front straight. Tomlinson was tight on his tail and was forced to slow while Randy Breunig shot to the outside and into the lead. With less than ten laps remaining, Erickson moved into second and began to chase down Breunig. As the pair raced the final two laps it was Breunig out in front and Erickson tight on his tail. When the checkered flag waved at the conclusion of lap sixty, it was Breunig who captured his first win of the season. Following Breunig and Erickson across the line were Al Weishoff, Andy Tomlinson and Terry Sauer. Finishing in sixth through tenth were Don Gaserude of Fort Atkinson, Dean Schultz of Juneau, Scott Nottestad of Cambridge, Rich Schumann Jr. of Portage and Butch Mierendorf of Lake Mills. With Breunig and Erickson swapping first and second places finishes in the first two Pepsi Series races, the two are now tied for the lead in the series standings going into the Pepsi championship race in August. Once again showing how tight the competition is at the speedway, Breunig is the ninth different feature winner in the late model division this season in the ten events held. Breunig also trimmed the lead in the regular point standings. Dean Schultz of Juneau leads with Randy Breunig now only eight points back in second.
Kevin Anderson of Cottage Grove slipped by Bob Jacobs of DeForest on lap twenty-four of the twenty-five lap street stock feature and went on to his first feature win. He is the seventh different winner in the division this season. Ron Preskar came on strong to finish in second. Bob Jacobs was third followed by Scott Riedner of Waunakee and Ron Schmitt of Jackson. Dave Schwark of Sun Prairie used some good luck to help him capture his first career feature win in the twenty lap hobby stock feature. Schwark had led from the start but Lincoln Keeser of Milton was able to get by as the field was working lap nineteen. Unfortunately for Keeser, the yellow flag waved before the lap was completed. Under the rules, the restart is lined up as the field crossed the line on the last fully completed lap. That put Schwark back out in front and this time he was not about to let anyone get by as he raced to his first feature win. Jim Rohrbeck of Portage drove to second ahead of Lincoln Keeser. John Remsik of Sun Prairie was fourth. Justin Schultz of Rio was fifth.
Steve Oetzel of Marshall scored his first back up win to become the sixth different winner in the division this season. Dan Sheldon of Madison drove to second. Dave Moore of McFarland was third. Dean Schultz led the late model division in qualifying turning a lap in 13.825. Scott Riedner paced the street stocks at 14.751. Ken Scott of Rio was quick in the hobby stocks at 15.578. Late model heat race wins were registered by John Acker of Spring Green, Duane Deppe and Steve Dobbratz of Rio. Street stock heat race wins went to Joe Wendorf of Jefferson, Kevin Anderson and John Kolb of Horicon. Don Fassett of Portage and Jim Hibner of Pardeeville were victorious in the hobby stock heats. John Acker recorded the late model semi-feature win over Butch Mierendorf and Jeff Falbe of Beaver Dam. Racing action continues this Friday night at the Columbus 151 Speedway with Auto Armor Night. In addition to a regular program of late model, street stock, hobby stock and back up racing, Junior Motorsports will also be in action.
