Schumann Jr., scores Late Model victory
at Columbus 151 Speedway! August 4, 2000; Columbus, WI. - Rich Schumann Jr. of Portage raced to his second win of the season in the thirty-five lap late model feature on Burger King/ESPN 1070 Junior Fan Club Night at the Columbus 151 Speedway on Friday night. Schumann moved passed Dale Smith of Lake Mills on lap seven and built up a sizeable lead. However, Scott Nottestad of Cambridge and Al Weishoff of Otsego began to work their way to the front. Nottestad, who started the event in the fifth row, moved into second and began to cut the gap. Weishoff raced from the seventh row and soon moved into third and also closed in on the two leaders. Nottestad had caught Schumann by lap twenty-six and began to challenge for the lead. Two cautions late in the event closed the field and set up the dash to the finish. Schumann, Nottestad and Weishoff battled fiercely to the end with Schumann holding on to win. Weishoff edged out Nottestad for second. Dale Smith followed in fourth. Will Godding of Cross Plains took fifth. Al Weishoffs second place finish allowed him to move into first place in the season point standings. Dean Schultz of Juneau, who had been the point leader going into the night, was involved in one of the late race incidents and finished fourteenth. Ron Preskar of Juneau scored his fourth win of the season in the twenty-five lap street stock feature. Preskar was quick from the start and used the outside groove to come from the ninth row and into the lead on lap eight. Dennis Schmidt of Juneau moved in on Preskar at one point, but Preskar was not to be denied. Gerry Junget of Rio drove a strong race as he also moved up from the ninth row to finish in third. John Schaefer of Monona had his best race of the year with a fourth place finish. Ron Schmitt of Jackson was fifth. Dennis Schmidt of Johnson Creek captured his first feature win of the season in the twenty lap hobby stock feature. He is the eighth different driver to win a feature in the division this season. Jerry Chapman of Juneau drove to second. Andy Junget of Rio followed in third ahead of Jim Rohrbeck of Portage. Dennis Gaserude of Oregon was fifth. Steve Oetzel of Marshall was victorious for the second time this season in the wild back up division race. Dan Sheldon of Madison was second. Fast times for the evening were turned in by Dean Schultz in the late models at 13.806, Ron Preskar in the street stocks at 14.614 and Grant Lindner of Poynette in the hobby stocks at 15.638. Late model heat race wins were registered by Clayton Braaksma of Beaver Dam, John Acker of Spring Green, and Butch Mierendorf of Lake Mills. Street stock heat race action saw wins recorded by Kevin Anderson of Cottage Grove, Gerry Junget and Josh Courtney of Janesville. Hobby stock heat race wins went to Jerry Chapman and Lincoln Keeser of Milton. David Hyatt of Waunakee won the B.J.s Roadside rollover contest. Big wheel race winners were Dayne Retallick of Marshall and Drew Magnor of Sun Prairie. Racing action continues this Friday night with the Pepsi Triple 60s Challenge Series Championship Round. The late model feature will be 60 laps. Junior Motorsports will also be in action. There will be a toy toss for the kids. Pepsi Triple 60's CHALLENGE SERIES Championship! Special; Columbus, WI.The late model Pepsi Triple 60s Challenge Series Championship Round is scheduled for Friday night August 11. Jason Erickson of Cambridge won round one in June while Randy Breunig of Columbus won round two in July. Both Erickson and Breunig had second place finishes in the round that they did not win. With that being the case, the two are tied for the lead heading into the 60-lap championship race.Terry Sauer of Waterloo is ranked third in the series and would like to pick up his first feature win of the season. Al Weishoff of Otsego is fourth in the Pepsi standings and his second place feature finish last Friday night has moved him into the Columbus 151 season point standings lead. Weishoff has one feature win to his credit this season and has been running very strong as of late. Andy Tomlinson of Poynette is ranked fifth in the Pepsi series ahead of Russ Goodwin of Beloit. Scott Nottestad of Cambridge is ranked seventh and still holds a mathematical chance at a tie for the Pepsi series crown. Nottestad has one feature win at the track this season. Although the overall Pepsi series is out of reach, Rich Schumann Jr. of Portage is coming off his second win of the season and would like to add the championship feature to the list. The only other driver to have two feature wins at Columbus this season, Steve Dobbratz of Rio, crashed hard last Friday night and will have a lot of work ahead of him this week in order to be ready for Pepsi Night. Dean Schultz of Juneau has one feature win this season and has been on top of the regular season standings much of the year. He has run into some bad luck recently and has dropped to second in the standings. Schultz would like to turn that around this week with a win in the Pepsi championship race.
