The competition was the key of successful Y2K season at Columbus 151!

September 23, 2000; Columbus, WI. - The script remained the same for the 2000 racing season at the Columbus 151 Speedway. With forty-two different drivers winning feature events in the four weekly divisions and track championships decided at the last event in both the late model and back up divisions, the Columbus 151 Speedway once again proved to be one of the most competitive tracks in the country.

The late model division had twelve different drivers record feature wins over the seventeen race events held. Twenty-four drivers finished in the top five in at least one feature race, eighteen won heat races and five set fast time. Dean Schultz of Juneau, Don Gaserude of Fort Atkinson, Steve Dobbratz of Rio, Rich Schumann Jr. of Portage and Bill Retallick of Marshall each won two feature events. Those with one feature win were Scott Nottestad of Cambridge, John Acker of Spring Green, Jason Erickson of Cambridge, Al Weishoff of Otsego, Randy Breunig of Columbus, Butch Mierendorf of Lake Mills and Andy Tomlinson of Poynette.

The top three drivers were only separated by twenty points going into the final race event of the season. At the conclusion of the fifty lap Season Championship feature, Al Weishoff claimed his first late model track championship by edging out Dean Schultz by a mere seven points. Schultz had won the Season Championship feature with Weishoff following him across the line to take the title. Weishoff, driving the Falbe Collision and Automotive Center sponsored Monte Carlo, had one feature win, six top five feature finishes and set fast time on three occasions on his way to the championship. Weishoff finished fourth in the Pepsi Triple 60’s Challenge Series and finished second in the Hard Charger standings, only two points behind Dean Schultz.

Finishing behind Weishoff and Schultz in the season point standings were Randy Breunig, Terry Sauer of Waterloo and John Acker. In sixth through tenth were Butch Mierendorf and Scott Nottestad in a tie for sixth, Don Gaserude, Brent Knight of Watertown and Jeff Falbe of Beaver Dam.

The Hard Charger standings were won by Dean Schultz by two points over Al Weishoff. Randy Breunig followed in third. Andy Tomlinson was fourth. Scott Nottestad was fifth.

The late model Rookie of the Year honors were taken by Scott Nottestad. Brent Knight was ninety-four points back in second. Driving the Badger Consulting sponsored Monte Carlo, Nottestad finished in a tie for sixth in the season point standings while recording one feature win, three top five feature finishes and one heat win. He finished ninth in the Pepsi Triple 60’s Challenge Series and fifth in the hard charger points.

The street stock division had eleven different drivers register feature wins in the seventeen events held. Twenty-five drivers finished in the top five in at least one feature event, twenty-two drivers won heat races and four set fast time. Ron Preskar of Juneau led the division with four feature wins. Kevin Anderson of Cottage Grove had three feature wins. Ron Coppernoll of Madison was victorious twice. Those with one feature win were Ron Schmitt of Jackson, Curt Thompson of Palmyra, Rick Coppernoll of Marshall, R.C. Coppernoll of Columbus, Dan Schmidt of Watertown, Dale Ripp of Sun Prairie, Dennis Schmidt of Juneau and Gerry Junget of Rio.

The street stock track championship honors went to Ron Preskar. It is the second time he has won the championship with the first coming in 1998. Preskar, driving the Jensen’s Piggly Wiggly sponsored Cutlass, recorded four feature wins, eleven top five feature finishes, four heat wins and set fast time eleven times on his way to the championship. He also won the Hard Charger title for the year.

Ron Schmitt finished second in the season point standings. Rick Coppernoll placed third ahead of Ron Coppernoll and Gerry Junget. Finishing in sixth through tenth were Kevin Anderson, Dan Schmidt, R.C. Coppernoll, Bob Jacobs of DeForest and John Schafer of Monona.

Finishing behind Ron Preskar in the Hard Charger standings were Rick Coppernoll, Gerry Junget, Ron Schmitt and Scott Riedner of Waunakee.

The Rookie of the Year in the street stock division was taken by Ron Coppernoll. Gerry Junget, who missed the first few weeks of the year, placed a very respectable second at one hundred four points back. Coppernoll drove the K and Z Concrete sponsored Chevy to two feature wins, five top five feature finishes, one heat win and one time fast qualifier in winning the rookie honors. He finished fourth in the regular season point standings. Coppernoll also finished sixth in the Hard Charger standings.

The hobby stock division saw eleven drivers win feature events in the seventeen races held. Seventeen drivers had at least one top five feature finish, fifteen won heat races and four set fast time. Dennis Gaserude of Oregon and Bret Schmidt of Watertown each had three feature wins. Jerry Chapman of Juneau and Dave Schwark of Sun Prairie each had two feature wins. Those with one win were Grant Lindner of Poynette, Jason Hibner of Pardeeville, Jim Rohrbeck of Portage, Dennis Schmidt of Johnson Creek, Roger Stephenson of Cambridge, Lincoln Keeser of Milton and John Remsik of Sun Prairie.

Dennis Gaserude captured the track championship for the fourth time. His other championships came in 1996, 1997 and 1999. His accomplishments for the year included three feature wins, ten top five feature finishes, seven heat wins and four times fast qualifier. He also won the Hard Charger standings.

Finishing behind Gaserude in the regular season standings were Jim Rohrbeck, Andy Junget of Rio, Jerry Chapman and Grant Lindner. In sixth through tenth were Bret Schmidt, Justin Schultz of Rio, Jason Hibner, Lincoln Keeser and John Remsik.

Following Gaserude in the Hard Charger standings were Andy Junget, Jim Rohrbeck, Grant Lindner and Jerry Chapman.

Bret Schmidt edged out Justin Schultz for the Rookie of the Year by only sixteen points. Schmidt drove the Moe’s Place sponsored Chevy to sixth in the regular season point standings and to eighth in the Hard Charger points. He had three feature wins, five top five feature finishes and one heat to his credit for the season.

The back up division had eight different drivers visit victory lane in the eighteen events held. Ron Schneidewind of Madison raced to five wins. Mark Remsik of Deerfield drove to three wins. Dave Moore of McFarland, Rick Verdon of Fitchburg, Steve Broome of Deansville and Steve Oetzel of Marshall each had two wins. Those with one win were Jim Remsik of DeForest and Bruce Havel of Deerfield.

Ron Schneidewind claimed his first track championship edging out Dave Moore of McFarland by only one point. Rick Verdon followed in third. Dan Sheldon of Madison was fourth. Mark Remsik took fifth.

Matthew Wachuta of Oregon finished ninth in the standings for Rookie of the Year.

The awards banquet will be held at the Park Ponderosa in McFarland on Saturday March 3, 2001. The Moore’s Towing & Service Racing 2001 Car Show will be held on Sunday April 22. The 2001 racing Season Opener will be on Sunday April 29. The first Friday night program is scheduled for May 4.
