Acker scores career first Late Model
victory after wild finish! May 19, 2000; Columbus, WI. - In the first two races of the season at the Columbus 151 Speedway, John Acker of Spring Green had led most of the way in the late model feature events only to lose out on the last lap. This time Acker was moved to the top spot after an incident involving the two race leaders occurred in turn three of the last lap. The win awarded to Acker on NAPA Auto Parts of Columbus and Sun Prairie Night was his first.
Don Gaserude of Fort Atkinson had led from the start of the thirty-five lap event while the battle for position behind him was fierce. In the closing laps Mike Langsdorf moved in to challenge Gaserude for the lead. Langsdorf looked to the outside but was unable to make the pass. On the last lap as the two entered turn three, Langsdorf moved to the inside of Gaserude. The two made contact and Gaserude spun. Langsdorf continued on but was penalized by the trackside officials for the contact. This moved Acker to the top spot and his first visit to victory lane as a feature winner. With two second place feature finishes and the win, Acker holds down first in the point standings. Dean Schultz of Juneau moved up to finish second followed by Mike Kolb of Wauwatosa. Fourth went to Randy Breunig of Columbus. Andy Tomlinson came from the eighth row to cross the line in fifth.
Curt Thompson of Palmyra made his first race of the season at the speedway a memorable one as he held off the challenges of Ron Preskar of Juneau to capture the win in the twenty-five lap street stock feature. With the second place finish, Preskar moved into the point lead. Rick Coppernoll of Marshall drove to third ahead of Bob Jacobs of DeForest. Chuck Egli of Waterloo finished fifth in his first race in the division. Dennis Gaserude of Oregon took over the lead on lap fifteen and went on to his second win of the season in the twenty lap hobby stock feature. John Remsik of Sun Prairie drove a strong race and finished second. Bret Schmidt of Watertown took third ahead of Jerry Chapman of Juneau. Jim Rohrbeck of Portage moved up well and finished in fifth. Ron Schneidewind of Madison took over the lead on lap three when the two front runners spun trying to avoid another car and went on to score his second win of the season in the back up division. Rick Verdon of Fitchburg drove to second. Mark Remsik of Deerfield was third. Dirk Wilker was victorious in the Formula Indy Racing Association Pro division feature. Anthony Wallace took the honors in the Pro Am division. Terry Sauer of Waterloo was awarded the win in the first late model heat after the apparent winner by inches, John Acker, was disqualified for being too light. Don Gaserude won the second heat. Ron Preskar and Rick Coppernoll claimed street stock heat race wins. Andy Junget of Rio and Dennis Gaserude won the hobby stock heats. Formula Indy Racing Association heat wins were registered by Don Spiewak and Vern Brown. Racing will continue this Friday night at the Columbus 151 Speedway with Shermans Garage & Body Shop Night.
