Gaserude big winner at Columbus 151! June 2, 2000; Columbus, WI. - Don Gaserude of Fort Atkinson led from start to finish as he picked up his first win of the season in the Miller Lite 50/ESPN 1070 late model feature at the Columbus 151 Speedway on Friday night. Russ Goodwin of Beloit and Andy Tomlinson of Poynette pressured Gaserude much of the way while they engaged in a fierce battle for the second position. Goodwin and Tomlinson traded positions a couple of times with Goodwin claiming the spot at the finish.
Jeff Falbe of Beaver Dam drove a strong race to come across the line in fourth. Dean Schultz of Juneau moved up from the seventh row to finish in fifth. That finish allowed Schultz to move into the point lead. Finishing in sixth through tenth were Butch Mierendorf of Lake Mills, Rob Retallick of Marshall, Terry Sauer of Waterloo, Randy Breunig of Columbus and Andy Wendt of Watertown.
Rick Coppernoll of Marshall drove to his first win of the season in the twenty-five lap street stock feature. Ron Preskar of Juneau worked his way up from the seventh row to take second. Noel Ramge of Helenville followed in third ahead of Curt Thompson of Palmyra. Bob Jacobs of DeForest, who led early in the event, was fifth.
Jason Hibner of Pardeeville took over the lead on lap eleven and went on to his first win of the season in the twenty lap hobby stock feature. Jim Rohrbeck of Portage moved up well and finished in second. Ken Scott of Rio came from the ninth row to cross the line in third. Jerry Chapman of Juneau was fourth. Dennis Gaserude of Oregon was fifth.
Rick Verdon of Fitchburg captured his first win of the season in the back up division taking the win over Dave Moore of McFarland and Ron Schneidewind of Madison. Jamie Moll of Madison was victorious in the fifteen lap Junior Motorsports feature. Denver Lapacek of Madison drove to second. Third went to Ben Kreyer of Poynette. Ray Kreyer of Poynette followed in fourth. Nick Maerz of Arena was fifth. Due to heavy rain during the week, time trials were delayed while water was pumped from the track and infield. The late model division was the only division to qualify. Dean Schultz led the field with a time of 13.873. Late model heat race wins were registered by Terry Sauer, Don Gaserude and Rich Schumann Jr. of Portage. Ron Schmitt of Jackson and Rick Coppernoll were victorious in the street stock heats. Chris Matz of Watertown and Jerry Chapman recorded wins in the hobby stock heats. The Junior Motorsports dash was claimed by Nick Maerz. Heat wins went to Ray Kreyer and Ben Kreyer. John Acker of Spring Green outraced Scott Nottestad of Cambridge and Rich Schumann Jr. to win the late model semi-feature. Racing action continues this Friday night at the Columbus 151 Speedway with Round One of the Pepsi Triple 60s Challenge Series. The late model division will race the first 60 lap feature of the three race series. A special photo/autograph session has been scheduled for the evening.
