Schumann tops Late Model action with Dick
Moore Memorial win! June 23, 2000; Columbus, WI. - Rich Schumann Jr. of Portage became the seventh different driver to win a late model feature in the eight events held this season at the Columbus 151 Speedway as he drove to victory in the fifty lap Dick Moore Memorial Night feature.
Schumann jumped into the lead at the start and at one point had built a healthy lead. In the last fifteen laps, however, Schumann came into heavy traffic that allowed Howard Hosely of Sun Prairie to close the gap. As the checkered flag waved it was Schumann across the line in first with Hosely on his rear bumper. John Acker of Spring Green drove to third. Andy Tomlinson moved up from the seventh row to finish in fourth. Bill Retallick of Marshall was fifth.
Ron Preskar of Juneau raced from the sixth row to capture the thirty lap street stock feature. It was the third win of the season for Preskar. Fred Strobel of Allenton grabbed the lead at the start. Shane Radtke of Helenville then moved up to challenge and moved out in front on lap twelve. Preskar began to move up through the pack. As the laps went by, Preskar moved into second and set his sights on Radtke. A caution on lap twenty-six bunched the field. That was all Preskar needed as he immediately moved to the outside of Radtke going into turn one on the restart and powered into the lead before the end of the lap. At the finish it was Preskar followed by Radtke and Ron Schmitt of Jackson. Ron Coppernoll of Madison crossed the line in fourth. R.C. Coppernoll of Columbus was fifth.
Jim Rohrbeck of Portage slipped by Jim Hibner of Pardeeville on lap five to take over the lead and went on to his first win of the season in the twenty-five lap hobby stock feature. Andy Junget of Rio worked his way up to finish in second. Jim Hibner followed in third ahead of Justin Schultz of Rio. Jerry Chapman of Juneau drove to fifth. Rick Verdon of Fitchburg scored his second win of the season in the back up division. The win allowed Verdon to take over the top spot in the point standings. Dave Moore of McFarland was third. Randy Breunig of Columbus led the late model division in qualifying turning a lap in 13.882. Ron Preskar was quick in the street stocks at 14.570. Grant Lindner of Poynette paced the hobby stocks at 15.462. Late model heat race wins were registered by Rich Schumann Jr., Butch Mierendorf of Lake Mills and Don Gaserude of Fort Atkinson.
