Sauer scores in Late Model action at
Columbus 151!
By Jim Remsik Jr.
August 17, 2001; Columbus, WI. - Terry Sauer of Waterloo laid in
wait and struck on lap twenty-six as then leader Mark Miller got loose after contact with
second place Steve Dobbratz. Scott "Chico" Riedner of Waunakee dominated the
Street Stock Main Event. Dennis Gaserude of Arena took a shortcut through the infield to
capture the Hobby Stock Feature. Brent Nottestad came from his sixth row starting position
to take the four-cylinder International Class Feature.
Brian Lind and Mark Miller brought the thirty-five lap late model feature
race to the line. Miller would grab the early lead and Steve Dobbratz of Rio
fell into the second position. The lone caution of the event was set up as Russ Goodwin of
Beloit entered turn one on lap sixteen. Gerry Auby of Sun Prairie nosed into the inside of
Goodwin who drifted high and fell in behind Auby. As Auby entered turn three he spun on
his own, points leader Gerry Junget of Rio went wide to avoid contact with the spun car
and left the track with a flat tire. Just six laps after the restart on lap twenty-two
Goodwin again caught a nose with this tail and this time was sent 360 degrees. No caution
would fall and Goodwin would only fall a few spots to eleventh place.
Meanwhile at the front of the pack Terry Sauer had reeled in the leaders of Miller and
Dobbratz. On lap twenty-six contact sent both Miller and Dobbratz drifting high and Sauer
slid by on the low side. Terry Sauer of Waterloo would go on to win the event followed by
Mark Miller, Brian Lind, Dean Schultz of Juneau, and Rob Retallick.
Kevin Anderson of Cottage Grove and Tom Collins of Lake Mills battled door to door for the
first few laps of the Street Stock Main Event. An early caution for the spinning Joe
Roatch of Stoughton gave Collins the single-file lead and opened the door for Scott
Riedner of Waunakee. Riedner worked the outside groove on the restart and was unstoppable.
As they
crossed the finish line it was Riedner, followed by Collins, Anderson, James Pankow, and
Ed Jackson of Madison.
The twenty-lap Hobby Stock Feature got off to a rough start, on lap two Joe Edwards
swerved to avoid Ernie Witte of Johnson Creek. Edwards promptly found the wall and ended
his chances for the event. On the restart John Remsik of Madison moved to the outside and
moved to the front of the field. By lap six Remsik found the leader Witte and made his
move to the outside. As they entered turn one pole-sitter Randy Kamenick dove to the
inside to make it three wide. The yellow flag fell on lap eight as the three leaders made
contact and a mess; Kamenick would be sent to the rear for his participation.
Ernie Witte had the lead on the restart followed by Remsik, James Schmidt of Jefferson
and Dennis Gaserude. Remsik and Gaserude moved immediately to the outside and by lap ten;
Remsik had motored past very loose Witte. By lap thirteen Gaserude had passed Witte and
caught up to Remsik, Jerry Chapman of Juneau now held third. Gaserude, who usually takes
the high groove, nosed inside of Remsik. Remsik held his ground as Gaserude went through
the infield when he ran out of racing surface pushing Remsik halfway through turns three
and four before letting up and returning to racing. Chapman slipped by Remsik who fell to
third. The lapped traffic of lap nineteen would not be a factor as Gaserude took the win
then it was Jerry Chapman, John Remsik, Jim Rohrbeck of Portage, and Chuck Egli.
The International Class returned this week bringing with them plenty of three-wide racing
and infamous little car names. Five of the nearly twenty four-cylinder pilots were at
least second generation drivers including Scott Nottestad, Brother Brent, both sons of
Randy Nottestad who also competed in this grand re-opening of the division. Also Tory
Adams, Mike Drays, and Aaron Rude of Cambridge son of Mike Rude.
Tory Adams of Madison and Charles Dixon of Waukesha brought the twenty-lap main event to
the line. Adams grabbed the early lead and by lap six it was a three way battle for the
lead with Chris Quam of Stoughton coming out in front. The first caution of the event fell
on lap ten as Randy Nottestad of Cambridge spun in turns three and four. In turns one and
two Derek Bettenhausen and Tory Adams got together with severe body damage to Adams' Ford
Mustang, he would continue on to finish fourteenth. On the lap ten restart Quam would
maintain the lead followed by Mike Drays of Milton. Brent Nottestad took off like a rocket
and would claim the lead on lap twelve.
Mike Dixon of Kellner brought out the second and final caution on lap sixteen, spinning
in turns one and two. A battle for the lead was shaping up between Ed Wolff III of Clyman
as the white flag came out. Chasing Nottestad hard into turn three for the final time
Wolff was surprised by the lapped vehicle of Dennis Clapp from Madison and nearly spun.
Wolff would regain control to finish second behind Nottestad, followed by Scott Nottestad
of Stoughton, Chris Quam, and Aaron Rude of Cambridge.
Bruce Havel of Deerfield took home another victory in the eight-lap Back-Up division main
event. Steve Oetzel took the early lead followed by Jim Remsik of Deforest and Mark Remsik
of Madison. The brothers Remsik both took scenic routes around the raceway for lap one. On
lap three the leader Oetzel spun his car down the front straight handing the lead to Dave
Moore of McFarland. Bruce Havel and Dave Moore battled until lap five when Havel gained
sole possession of the lead. As they came across for the checkered flag it was Havel,
Moore, Jim Remsik, Steve Oetzel, and Mark Remsik.
