Tomlinson Tops Columbus 151 Late Models! August 2, 2002; Columbus, WI. - Andy Tomlinson of Poynette captured his first win of the season as he drove to victory in 50-lap late model feature on Silvia A. Sherman Memorial Night at the Columbus 151 Speedway.
In an event that was slowed by several cautions, Butch Mierendorf of Lake Mills grabbed the lead at the start followed closely by Brent Knight of Watertown. Tomlinson, who started the event in the seventh row, methodically picked off car after car by using the outside groove. By the midway point, Tomlinson slipped by Knight for the second position. By lap thirty, Tomlinson was battling Mierendorf for the lead. On lap thirty-eight, Tomlinson moved past Mierendorf to take over the top spot and went on to score the win. Tomlinson is the seventh different driver to win a feature in the division this season. The win also allowed him to move past Dean Schultz of Juneau to take over the lead in the point battle for the track championship. Mierendorf finished the race in second. Brent Knight had his best run of the season with his third place finish. Gerry Junget of Rio came on strong in the closing laps to take the fourth spot. Terry Sauer of Waterloo was fifth. In the 35-lap street stock feature, Randy Padfield of Edgerton led from start to finish in recording his first win of the season. Padfield is the tenth different winner in the division this season. Bobby Stough Jr. of Waunakee moved up from the sixth row to take second. Kevin Anderson of Cottage Grove also came from the sixth row to finish in third. Bob Jacobs of DeForest started the event in the seventh row and also moved up well to cross the line in fourth. Dale Ripp of Sun Prairie was fifth. Terry Wangsness of Whitewater has run strong when he has raced at the Columbus 151 Speedway this season. This time Wangsness drove from the ninth starting position to take over the lead on lap eleven and then cruised to his first win of the season in the 25-lap hobby stock feature. Lincoln Keeser of Milton ran near the front most of the way and finished in second. Ken Scott of Rio was impressive in his run to a third place finish. Twice Scott was involved in incidents on the track that caused him to have to make repairs in the pits. Each time he made it back onto the track in time to tag onto the rear for the restarts. Scott quickly moved up through the pack on both occasions on his way to his eleventh top five feature finish of the season. Grant Lindner of Poynette also came from back in the field to place fourth. Jim Schmidt of Watertown followed in fifth. Bob Jacobs took advantage of a late race spin by leader Matthew Wachuta of Brooklyn to claim his third win of the season in the back up division. Rick Verdon of Fitchburg finished a strong second ahead of Dave Moore of McFarland.
