Burton Brown Captures Wisconsin Challenge
Series Super Late Model Special at Columbus 151! May 5, 2002; Columbus, WI. - A Burton Brown of Neenah slipped past Ken Reiser of Waukon, IA with only two laps to go and drove to the victory in the Wisconsin Challenge Series Spring Fling 75 lap super late model feature at the Columbus 151 Speedway on Sunday afternoon.
Starting on the outside of row one, Jon Hornby of Sun Prairie jumped into the lead at the drop of the green flag. The first caution of the event occurred on lap seven for a spin by Luke Westenberg of Palmyra between turns one and two. Hornby continued to lead following the caution until lap thirteen when Ken Reiser was able to slip by on the inside. Reiser cruised out in front while Brown gradually worked his way into second by lap forty. As the pair worked lap traffic, Brown challenged Reiser for the lead and was able to get by going into turn one as the field worked lap 46. However, a spin by Frank Kreyer of Cottage Grove in turn four before the completion of the lap brought out the second caution. That put Reiser back in front for the restart. Reiser took advantage of the opportunity to take the point and pulled away to a several car length lead. But once the leaders caught the tail of the pack and began working the traffic, Brown closed in once again. Then with two laps remaining, Brown again was able to get by Reiser and go on to record
the win. Scott Patrick of Dousman also was able to move past Reiser to finish in the
second spot. Reiser finished third ahead of Jeremy Lepak of Wausau. Gary Back of Vesper
followed in fifth. Finishing in sixth through tenth were Don Turner of LaCrosse, Allen
Check of Shantytown, Rocky Breezer of Poynette, Mark Eswein of Wisconsin Rapids and Kyle
Kinder of McFarland. Brent Schmidt of Watertown took over the lead on the final lap to capture the 25-lap street stock feature. Kevin Anderson of Cottage Grove raced to second ahead of Kyle Jarlsberg of Cambridge. Dennis Catencamp of Marshall followed in fourth. Ian Marks of Columbus was fifth. Rick Coppernoll led the street stocks in qualifying at 14.732. Heat race wins were registered by Dan Schmidt of Watertown and Kevin Anderson. Grant Lindner of Poynette moved up from the back row to claim the win in the 20-lap hobby stock feature. Lincoln Keeser of Milton drove to second. John Remsik of Madison took third. Jerry Chapman of Juneau followed in fourth. Dennis Gaserude of Belleville was fifth. Ken Scott of Rio recorded the fast lap in hobby stock qualifying at 15.550. Heat race wins went to Larry Moen of Madison and Johnny Robinson II of Beloit. Steve Oetzel of Marshal beat Mark Williams of Marshall and Bob Jacobs of DeForest to win the back up division race. |
