Schultz Wins at Columbus 151 Speedway; Wendt Locks up Season Championship!
By Natasha Fabian

August 27, 2004; Columbus, WI. -  Dean Schultz won the 35-lap Late Model feature Friday night at the Columbus 151 Speedway on Voit Concrete night at the races. However, the win was not enough to gain any ground on current point
leader Andy Wendt, whose third place finish was enough to lock up the 2004 championship title. Schultz started the race from the inside of row 5, quickly advancing to take the lead only a few laps into the race. The fastest cars on the track were the twin number 18s of Brady Liddle and Andy Wendt who dashed to the front but ran out of laps before having any
opportunity to close in on Schultz's lead.

Kevin Anderson won the thrilling Street Stock feature by approximately one foot over Bret Schmidt. Schmidt, the fast qualifier of the evening, suffered break troubles all evening, but the car was as fast as ever as he charged through the pack to the front. Anderson and Schmidt raced several laps side-by-side, raising the crowd on its feet every lap, but at the line Anderson kept the edge and nosed by for the win.

The Hobby Stock points race was further unsettled during the feature race, leaving a margin of only 18 points and two weeks for Larry Moen to hold on for the championship over Gary Pashley. The two have been extremely competitive in their chase for the championship, swapping the lead almost weekly. Moen had the advantage coming into the night, but Pashley gained many valuable points by winning the night's feature, in which Moen finished eighth. Moen was in front of the pack for the majority of the time, and Pashley was right on his bumper for a time. Just when it looked as though Pashley's time had run out, Moen made contact with Gary Pashley, Sr., sending Moen to the rear, and Pashley taking the lead to the win.

The Bandit point race will likely come down to the feature results on championship night to determine the season title-holder. The race between Dan Birkett and Bryan Johnson has been neck-and-neck all season long, eight points separating the two with only two nights to go. Johnson, a rookie, and Birkett, going into retirement midseason last year with an injury, want the title equally greatly and it shows. Birkett turned a qualifying lap faster than any other car, but Johnson was only 0.020 seconds behind him. Johnson won the heat race, as well as the feature, but Birkett recorded third and second place finishes respectively.

George Wachuta won the race for the Backup cars. Steve Oetzel crossed the line in second, and point leader Mark Remsik third. Bruce Havel, who is the track, and unofficially world, record holder for qualifying with a time of just over 15 seconds (faster than the Bandits and Hobby Stocks) made his first appearance of the night and finished fourth in the nine car race.
