Jarlsberg Wins Pepsi Opener
at 151 Speedway!
By Natasha Fabian |
May 28, 2004; Columbus, WI. - A field of 28
Limited Late Models were on hard for the first round of the Pepsi Triple 60s Friday
evening at the Columbus 151 Speedway. Eighteen made the show on time, while two advanced
from a semi-feature qualifier event.
Jerry Auby and Don Mattrisch made up the front row of the field for the main
event, but neither would maintain those positions for very long. After two early race
cautions, 20-year-old second-generation driver Kyle Jarlsberg of Cambridge took the lead
and quickly pulled away to a one-third track lead.
Jarlsberg's lead would be closed up, however, on lap 35 when a spin by Andy Tomlinson
brought the field under caution. Upon restarting, Denny Bergeron came from the back to
give Jarlsberg a run for his money. One more caution bunched up the field even further,
bringing Andy Wendt into the mix of leaders. As Wendt was plotting how to get around
Jarlsberg, Mike Taylor slowed the field with his spin in turn 3. Wendt and Jarlsberg ran
side-by-side for the rest of the race, but Jarlsberg was the winner by a nose.
The Formula Indy Racing Association also put on a fan-friendly show, and second-year
competitor Grant Greenfield of Waupun set a new track record in his qualifying effort.
Defending series champion Vern Brown took home the win in the 20-lap feature race.
The Columbus 151 Speedway races Limited Late Models, Street Stocks, Hobby Stocks, Bandits,
and Backup cars every Friday night. Coming up June 4 will be the second round of the Pepsi
Series, featuring a 60-lap feature for the Limited Late Models. Gates open at 5:00,
qualifying is at 6:30, with racing to follow at 8:00. More information can be found online
