Wendt Wins at 151 - Extends
Point Lead!
By Natasha Fabian |
June 25, 2004; Columbus, WI. - Contact on lap one
of the Late Model feature started the Miller sponsored field in single file order.
Chrispin Kenney held the point, Delbert Desjarlais, John Wasserburger, Mike Taylor, and
Duane Deppe lined up behind him. An incident occurred on the track upon completion of lap
26, closing up Kenneys lead significantly, with Mike Held, Rob Retallick, and the
omnipresent Andy Wendt - a strong contender for the season championship breathing down his
neck.
As Retallick was aiming to pounce on Helds second place position, Tyler
James spun in turn two. At the restart, Held clung to the leader like glue, making contact
several times before passing for the top spot on lap 29. He was quickly black flagged for
the behavior, and Wendt became the new leader. Taylor had problems with his Ford, causing
h! im to lose numerous positions. Chuck Egli spun in turn one, drawing the infamous yellow
flag an additional time. Wendt led until the checkered flag was displayed, Wisconsin
Challenge Series competitor Dean Schultz ran second, Rob Retallick third, Don Gaserude
fourth, and quick time qualifier Aaron Wilke rounded out the top five.
Dustin Ward came from the back of the pack to win the feature in the Street Stock
division. The race was an intense one as Ward had to pass nearly every car on the field to
earn the top spot.
Lincoln Keeser took his first feature win of the season in the Hobby Stock feature. What
started out as an impressive night for Jim Tate Jr. ended with a DNF in the feature after
setting fast time and finishing fourth in his heat race early in the evening. Andy Raley
and Bryon Pillar made up the front row on the starting grid, however both faded from the
field rather early, leaving the race up to the cars who had been running mid-pack.
Brandon Johnson took the early lead in wild and crazy 4-cylinder Bandit feature. However,
that all changed when he slipped in oil and drove straight into a large tire planted in
turn three. Dan Birkett inherited the lead. The division ran the "wrong way"
around the track, a precaution that is occasionally followed to ensure that none of the
competitors in the entry-level class are setting up their cars. Birkett wasted no time and
jumped the restart, thus putting the track under caution once again. The battle in the
field was between Tina Remsik, Bryan Johnson, and Brian Paulson all vying for the second
position.
Rick Verdon won the Backup race, but Mark Remsik became the new points leader in the
division with his third place finish.
