Gaserude Wins Miller 50-Lap Feature
By Jim Remsik

July 8, 2005; Columbus, WI. - Don Gaserude of Fort Atkinson scored his first feature win of the season at Columbus 151 Speedway in the extended race sponsored by Miller. Justin Schultz (Rio) and Tim Woollen (Sun Prairie) paced the field and would race side-by-side until lap two when Schultz gained a definite lead over Woollen. Woollen seemed to drop off the pace by lap six. On the following lap contact with Tyler James (Oconomowoc) would end both drivers’ nights while also collecting Jerry Eckhardt (Johnson Creek). Justin Schultz maintained the lead until he slid sideways coming out of turn two on lap nineteen.

It appeared for most of the back straight as though Schultz just might recover finally facing the entire field broadside and collecting the second-place car of Kurt Clapper (Dane). On the restart Don Gaserude inherited the lead as first and second-place were involved in the incident bringing out the caution. Exactly ten laps later the caution flag would fall for the quick qualifier John Wasserburger of Poynette (13.525) who spun all alone in turns three and four. Andy Wendt (Watertown) had found second place before the caution and would follow Gaserude as he pulled away from the field on the restart. Wendt would apply plenty of pressure but simply could not get around Gaserude. At the line following Gaserude and Wendt were Jason Thoma (Jefferson), Syvrud, and Dean Schultz (Juneau).

In Late Model heat race action Justin Schultz and Jerry Eckhardt were victorious

Bobbi Bishofberger (Fort Atkinson) picked up her second feature win of the season in the 25-lap Street Stock Feature. Bishofberger started on the pole inside Jim Rohrbeck (Portage). By lap four Rohrbeck appeared to be having problems and fell back in the outside groove. Dennis Schwark (Sun Prairie) would hold onto the second position while the rest of the field raced for third. As Grant Lindner (Poynette) and Dustin Ward (Beaver Dam) raced hard into turn three Ward slid up to the third groove. With Lindner secure in third the fast qualifying threesome of Don Trush (14.213, Sun Prairie), Chico Riedner (14.321, Waunakee) and Kevin Anderson (14.173, Cottage Grove) raced toward the front. Only one would crack into the top five. As the checkers fell Bishofberger, Schwark and Lindner lead Trush and Ward.

Street Stock heat races were awarded to John Remsik (Watertown) and Ken Morris (Madison).

Edgerton’s Jesse Ayers scored a feature win in the 20-lap Hobby Stock feature. Gary Haarklau (Madison) and Travis Schneeberg (Cottage Grove) brought the field up to speed. By lap four Ayers was challenging for the lead from his third-row starting position. Lapped traffic became an obstacle on lap eleven and a problem on lap thirteen. The lap-down vehicle of Gary Fredrick (Fall River) was tapped and spun by Roger Stephenson (Cambridge), Fredrick attempted to correct and wound up broadside in front of the last half of the field. Everyone split and drove around except for Dan Gosda (Sun Prairie) who clipped the front end of Fredrick’s car disabling both cars. On the restart Ayers walked out on the field. Brian Hebl (Mount Horeb) made a strong push at the end and picked up the second-position. On lap twenty the checkers were met by Ayers, Hebl, Larry Moen (Madison), Haarklau, and Stephenson.

Hobby Stock heat race victories were earned by Larry Moen and Doug Pashrig (West Bend). Fast time of the evening was set by Jim Tate Jr. (15.220, Watertown).

Rodney Mundt (Johnson Creek) and Kyle Riedner (Waunakee) lead the 18-lap Bandit Feature to the line. Mundt jumped out to the early lead with Riedner joining him in the low groove. Sean Bailey (Sun Prairie) quickly passed Ashley Smith (Lake Mills) and proceeded to apply pressure on Steve Privett (Columbus). Privett would slide high in the corner and Bailey, Dale Smith (Lake Mills), and Nick Nolden (Lodi) freight-trained below him. By lap twelve Smith and Nolden had passed Bailey and Smith tried the outside against Riedner. Mundt would reach the finish-line first followed by Riedner, Nolden, Smith and Bailey.

It was a family affair in the Bandit heat races as Kyle and Brandon Riedner both won their respective heat races. Heat wins were also earned by Brittany Boyce (Marshall) and Kyle Watters (Sun Prairie. Watters also scored a win in the Semi-Feature and transferred to the main event along with Ryan Oetzel (Brodhead).

Wayne Hook (Oregon) jumped out to the early lead in the Wild & Crazy Back-Up race. George Wachuta quickly relieved him of that burden on lap two and went on to win the race. Wachuta also regained the points lead he lost last week to Dave Moore (McFarland). Wachuta was followed by Ryan Oetzel (Brodhead), Dave Moore, Jug Hur (Waunakee), and Rick Verdon (Fitchburg).
