By Jim Remsik |
August 5, 2005; Columbus, WI. - Ron Bishofberger leads
flag to flag to win the Star Packaging/Dick Moore Memorial 60 lap main event at the
Columbus 151 Speedway last Friday night.
Bishofberger and Scott Patrick paced the field to green in the ninth annual Dick
Moore Memorial feature. Bishofberger gained the advantage coming out of turn four on the
first lap and never relinquished the lead in the event. The inside line moved forward with
Randy Bruenig and Jim Syvrud moving into the second and third positions respectively on
lap one. The first and only caution flew lap six when Allen Petrie and Rob Retallick made
heavy contact in turns three and four.
After the restart, the front of the field lined up nose to tail and ran that way most
of the remainder of the race. The leaders never encountered much lapped traffic and pulled
out to a slight advantage. Randy Bruenig mounted a charge beginning on lap 40, but was
never able to overtake Bishofberger. At the checkered flag it was Bishofberger for the
win, followed by Bruenig, Syvrud, Kurt Clapper, and Pete Moore.
In earlier action, Tim Woollen and Rob Retallick finished one, two in the last chance
race to transfer to the feature. Also, Allen Petrie and John Wasserburger claimed heat
race victories. Quick time was held by Pete Moore with a 13.421 second tour of the oval.
In street stock action, Scott Riedner claimed the 30 lap feature. Dustin Ward and Troy
Yahn led the field of 16 to the green flag. Ward claimed the lead out of turn two on the
first lap and the inside line followed as Yahn dropped back positions on the start. By lap
two Ward held a lead with Bobbi Bishofberger second and Kyle Taylor third. The first
caution flew on lap six for a stalled car in turn four. During the caution, fourth place
running Dale Weatherwax left the track for leaking fluid, and Riedner took over that
position.
After the restart, on lap 11, Riedner moved his machine into the third spot behind the
leaders. Lap 15 brought out the second caution of the night when leader Ward and second
place Bishofberger made contact and Ward went around. Both would restart at the rear of
the field and the new leader would be Riedner with point leader Kevin Anderson in second.
The second 15 laps of the race saw Riedner keep Anderson at bay despite many attempts to
pass. At the flag, it was Riedner for the win followed by Anderson in a close second.
In earlier heat race action, Ken Morris and Anderson were victorious and Anderson also
held down quick time with a lap of 14.076.
Jim Tate, Jr. brought home the win in the Hobby Stock class Friday night. Tate moved up
from his outside second row starting spot to the lead by lap seven and never lost his
lead. The rest of the field ran side by side until lap 13 when caution flew for the
spinning car of Lincoln Keeser. Keeser struck a vehicle on the infield, but fortunately no
injuries were reported.
Unfortunately for Tate, his large lead was erased by the caution. But the remaining 12
laps saw no pass for the lead as Tate claimed the win followed by Johnny Robinson in
second and point leader Larry Moen third. Moen also set fast time for the Hobby Stocks
with a lap of 15.352. Heat winners were Travis Schneeberg and Nick Newton.
The 15 lap Bandit feature trophy went to quick qualifier Tom Bleecker. Kyle Riedner
claimed the early lead on lap one from his front row starting spot. Bleecker steered his
car to the front of the pack and overtook Riedner on lap 12 and pulled away during the
final three laps. The caution free race saw Bleecker win followed by Riedner, Rodney
Mundt, Marc Balis, and Rory Padfield. The transfers from last chance racing were Tim
Bristol and Kyle Waters. Heat winners included Carlyn Voigt, Marc Balis, Kyle Riedner and
Ryan Destefano.
Rick Verdon won the backup race claiming the point on lap three and pulling away.
George Wachuta was second and David Moore third.
Next Friday is Star Packaging night with a 40 lap street stock feature and the Formula
Indy Racing Assocation as well as Kids Activity Night.
