Concrete Night!
By Andrew Schaller |
August 19, 2005; Columbus, WI. - Nick Wendt inherited
the lead on lap five of the 35 lap main event and drove away to win the Voit Concrete late
model feature on Friday night at Columbus 151 Speedway.
Tony Schuchardt and Ron Bishofberger led the field of 18 late models
to the green flag. The two competitors ran side by side for the first four laps
until Schuchardt gained the advantage on the pack. Caution would fly on lap five of
the event for a major incident involving second place Bishofberger, Tyler James, Scott
Patrick and others. Seven cars total sustained damage and were relegated to the back
of the pack. On the restart, it was Schuchardt leading followed by Tim Woollen and
Nick Wendt. Before they were able to complete a lap after the drop of the green,
another accident occurred whenWoollen and leader Schuchardt made contact and went
spinning. Both cars were sent to the back and the new leader was Wendt. Wendt
would then pull out to a six car length lead until caution flew one final time on lap 31.
Wendt's lead would evaporate, but on the restart was never challenged for the lead.
At the checkered flag it was Wendt for the win followed by his father and point
leader Andy Wendt in second. Third was Clayton Braaksma and fourth went to Bill
Retallick.
In earlier heat race action, winners were Terry Sauer, Rob Retallick, and
John Wasserburger. Transfers from the semi feature were Sauer and Steve Dobratz.
Quick time was turned in by Aaron Wilke with a lap of 13.579.
The caution free 25 lap street stock feature belonged to Beaver Dam's Dustin Ward.
Ward and Kyle Taylor made up row one at the start. Ward gained the advantage
on lap two with Taylor in hot pursuit. The two leaders would pull out to a
straightaway advantage and run nose to tail for all 25 laps of the event. Taylor
would make many attempts to pass the leader, but never quite had enough to make the pass.
The first two rows on the start would hold their positions throughout the feature
and at the line it was Ward for the win followed by Taylor, Grant Lindner, Mike Heelein,
and Scott Riedner.
Riedner was quick qualifier with a lap of 14.169. Heat winners were Ward
and Dennis Schwark.
In hobby stock action, Alan Dorn would move forward from his seventh starting spot to
taste victory in the 20 lap feature. Gary Haarklau and Travis Schneeberg made up the
front row, and Haarklau took the early lead on lap one. By lap number three, Dorn
moved into the fourth position. He continued to pass cars and by lap 13 was
right behind leader Haarklau. Dorn immediately went to work on the high side for the
lead, and with three laps to go, made the pass. Dorn
pulled away to a comfortable win followed by Haarklau, Ryan Oldenhoff, Tylor Schultz, and
Lincoln Keeser.
Heat winners were William Stephenson and Keeser with quick time set by Larry Moen.
Tom Bleecker made it four in a row at Columbus 151 with another impressive performance
in the 18 car bandit feature. Coming from his outside seventh row starting spot,
Bleecker made a series of passes on the outside, sometimes going three wide, and moved
into the top five by lap ten. Meanwhile, pole sitter Rodney Mundt held the top
position, taking the lead on the first lap. On lap 12, Bleecker passed two cars and
moved into third. A caution would come out on lap 13 for debris and Bleecker would
line up behind leader Mundt and second place Hunter Schultz. Two laps later,
Bleecker would take both positions on the high side and move into first with three laps to
go. At the line, it was Bleecker for his fourth straight followed by Mundt, Schultz,
Kyle Stark, and Ryan Hart.
Heat winners included Carlyn Voigt, Ryan Oetzel, Steve Privett, and Darren Brown.
Transfers from the consolation to the semi feature were Greg Ovadahl and Ben Lewis.
The semi feature was won by Oetzel with Kyle Waters in second. Fast time was
held by Bleecker with a lap of 16.011.
In wild and crazy back up division action, Rick Verdon took the lead on lap two of the
eight lap race and never looked back. Verdon was first followed by David Moore and
George Wachuta.
Next Friday, August 26th, is the final race in the Pepsi Triple 60 Championship
for the late models. A very tight points battle will be decided with a 60 lap
feature for that division. Dean Schultz and Ron Bishofberger are currently tied for
the lead in this prestigious series with Andy Wendt and Bill Retallick in a close third
and fourth. A large group of drivers have a shot at the title and will be racing
door to door for every position. Don't miss this great event as well and full
program of racing in all divisions. Time trials are at 6:15 with racing at 8 pm.
