Pepsi Triple 60s Round
1 to Dean Schultz!
By Jim Remsik |
May 20, 2005; Columbus, WI. - Dean Schultz of
Juneau bested a field of 33 Late Models and now owns the lead in the Pepsi Triple
60s series. Former Late Model track champion Schultz was paired on the front row
with defending champion Andy Wendt of Watertown. At the drop of the green flag Schultz
grabbed the early lead and never looked back, Wendt gave chase but simply couldnt
make the outside work. With the front pair pulling away Ron Bishofberger of Fort Atkinson
drove hard to the inside taking away third place from Jim Syvrud.
Caution fell on lap 11 as the pack bunched up and spit out Jerry Auby of Sun
Prairie. On the restart Schultz, Wendt and Bishofberger checked out. Rio native Steve
Dobbratz, who had fast time on the evening with a 13.388, found the outside groove around
Dennis Schmidt. Caution slowed the field again on lap 37 for a spinning Kyle Jarlsberg.
Jarlsberg had transferred from the Semi Feature where with Tyler James he held off a worst
to almost first performance by Nick Wendt of Watertown. As the green flag flew so did the
top three stretching their advantage to a full straight away. Bishofberger made a late
race charge on second place Andy Wendt only to fall back in line. At the line it was
Schultz, Andy Wendt, Bishofberger, Syvrud and Jason Thoma of Jefferson.
Winners of the four Late Model heat races were Kyle Jarlsberg, visitor from the north Tom
McClintock of the La Crosse suburb of Onalaska, Andy Wendt, and Dean Schultz.
Dustin Ward and Bobbi Bishofberger brought the Street Stock feature to the line. Ward
grabbed the early lead and held it until he was slowly reeled in by Dennis Schwark of Sun
Prairie. Schwark waited patiently for an opportunity and got it on lap 20 when Ward pushed
high in turn one. Kevin Anderson made a strong charge on the outside to finish third. As
the checkers waved it was Schwark, Dustin Ward, Anderson, Bishofberger, and Jim Rohrbeck
of Portage. Heat winners in the Street Stock division included Dustin Ward and Ken Morris
of Madison. Don Trush, who turned in a 14.111 second lap on the quarter mile oval,
recorded the fastest time of the night.
In Hobby Stock action Lincoln Keeser was .15 (fifteen hundredths) of a second away from a
clean sweep as he picked up feature and heat race wins. Fast time belonged to Gary
Haarklau of Madison at 15.425.
In contrast to the veterans leading the Late Model feature the Hobby Stock feature was
rolled out with a pair of rookies at the point. Dan Gosda and Travis Schneeberg brought
the field up to speed with Gosda jumping out to an early lead. Caution fell early on lap 2
as contact between Nick Newton and Brian Hebl started a seven-car chain reaction.
Fortunately, all cars were able to continue as Gosda led the restart and the race up until
lap 6. Nick Newton challenged for the lead and would eventually slip past with Keeser and
Larry Moen. Keeser would go on to take the lead on lap 14 and they finished Keeser, Moen,
Alan Dorn of Waterloo, Tylor Schultz of Columbus and Gosda.
The top two in the feature, Keeser and Moen both took home their respective heat races.
On to the Bandit feature in which there were more cars than laps. Linda Carignan and
Matthew Reuter led the eighteen-car field into fifteen laps of feature racing action.
Early on Carignan and Ryan Oetzel of Brodhead battled for the lead with Oetzel taking
control as they crossed the line at lap 4. Bryan Johnson would lead lap five on through to
the checkered flag. At the line Johnson had lapped half of the field followed by Nick
Nolden of Lodi, Brian Paulson of Edgerton, Ryan Destefano, and Ryan Hart.
Ashley Smith of Lake Mills, Nick Nolden, and Ryan Destefano survived the very wild heat
races featuring four-wide racing. Michael Campbell of Janesville edged out Tim Draheim
from Beaver Dam on the last lap to win the semi feature. Bryan Johnson tied his track
record for fast time of the evening turning in a 15.968.
Dave Moore picked up his first Back-Up feature win of the season in a photo finish with
Mark Remsik of Madison. Moore held on for the win when Remsik got a good run off of the
final corner on the final lap. Following close behind were George Wachuta, Scott Hart and
John Remsik in the first ever Back-up race with a caution and a rolling restart.
On Tap: May 27 will be a full night of racing with all five regular divisions taking to
the track, Plus Auto Bowling and Stock Car Rides for kids at intermission.
