Wilke Victorious At
Columbus 151!
By Jim Remsik |
May 27, 2005; Columbus, WI. - Nick Wendt of Watertown
and Waterloos Aaron Wilke paced the cars at the start of the 35-lap Late Model main
event. Wendt took the early lead with Jim Syvrud following close on his tail. Aaron Wilke
would fall into line in third place where he would fend off the charges of Bret Schmidt
and Steve Dobratz of Rio.
Foreshadowing of events to come would occur when Syvrud got into the back of
Wendt in turn four. Wendt recovered down the front straight-away without losing the lead.
Wilke made a bid for second but, was unable to take the position away from Jim Syvrud. The
caution flag fell on lap 17 for #20 Bret Schmidt who spun in the middle of turns three and
four. Nick Wendt would keep the lead on the restart and all the way to lap 30. Much like
the earlier contact Syvrud made contact with the back of Wendts car with disastrous
results for the only driver to lead a lap in the feature so far.
Both cars spun bringing out the second caution flag and subsequently going to the rear
of the field. Third place Aaron Wilke then inherited the lead for the restart. At the end
of the five-lap shootout Wilke was first to the line despite the attempts of Steve
Dobratz, John Wasserburger of Poynette, Andy Wendt also of Watertown, and Jason Thoma who
set quick time for the evening at 13.467. Rookie Tim Woollen of Sun Prairie picked up his
first victory of the season in the first of two Late Model heat races, Tyler James out of
Oconomowoc claimed the second.
In Street Stock racing action Grant Lindner and Bobbi Bishofberger lead the pack to the
line for the feature event. The third generation driver, Bobbi Bishofberger, grabbed the
early advantage on the outside but could not shake Lindner who battled back to take the
lead on lap three. Kevin Anderson found the outside groove to his liking and rocketed up
to fourth by lap eight. Just four laps later Anderson was challenging for the lead with
Don Trush close behind. After a number of laps racing Lindner door-to-door Kevin Anderson
took the lead and ran. When all was said and done the 6-car length lead was more than
enough to beat Dustin Ward, Dan Schmidt to the line. Don Trush fought hard but was edged
out at the line by Cambrias Dale Weatherwax for the fourth spot.
Waunakees Brandon "Bud" Riedner picked up a heat race win as did Last
weeks feature winner Dennis Schwark. The fastest qualifying lap in the street stock
division was turned in by Kevin Anderson at 14.147 a mere three-thousandths of a second
faster than Don Trush.
Jim Tate Jr. held fast time on the evening in the Hobby Stock Division at 15.479. Heat
race victories were awarded to Orfordvilles Jim Robinson and Whitewaters own
Lincoln Keeser.
In Hobby Stock Feature action Gary Pashley of Marshall took advantage of his front row
starting position. Pashley overtook rookie Mike Storkson on lap 1 and the race would never
see another leader. Caution slowed the field on lap 3 for a spinning Tylor Schulz of
Columbus. During the caution #8 Joe Destefano had a small fire begin in his engine bay and
was unable to continue. The caution flew again on lap five when Kevin Zielski spun on the
front straight and was run into by Alan Dorn. Once racing resumed defending champion Larry
Moen and veteran Lincoln Keeser made there way to the front. Storkson held out as long as
he could but, lost second place to Moen on lap 19. At the line it was Pashley followed by
Moen, Alan Dorn, Mike Storkson and Lincoln Keeser.
Bryan Johnson of Stoughton nearly pulled out another clean sweep. After setting a new
track record of 15.955 and winning his heat Johnson was beat to the line by Ryan Destefano
who squeezed his nose to the inside and raced for a photo finish. Lapped traffic played a
part in the end result. At the line after Destefano and Johnson were Ryan Hart of
Edgerton, Steve Privett of Columbus and Sean Baileys CRX rounded out the top five.
In addition to Bryan Johnson, Nick Nolden of Lodi and Sean Watters of Sun Prairie picked
up heat wins with the Semi-feature also going to Watters.
Wayne Hook lead the first lap of the Wild & Crazy Back-Up Race. He was overtaken on
lap two by the dueling Dave Moore and Rick Verdon of Fitchburg. On lap 5 Verdon spun
leaving only George Wachuta with a chance to challenge for the lead. Wachuta drove his #39
hard into the final corner and made contact with Dave Moore. Moore slowed and Wachuta
recovered quicker to take the win.
