Clayton Braaksma Claims
Late Model Feature at Columbus 151 Speedway!
By Jim Remsik |
June 3, 2005; Columbus, WI. - Clayton Braaksma from
Beaver Dam and Andy Wendt of Watertown paced the Late Model feature on a slick racing
surface Friday night at Columbus 151 Speedway. In an earlier event Dennis Schwark
reportedly lost an oil pan plug from his Hobby Stock machine.
A heavy layer of oil-dry was laid down in all but the first groove. Wendt tried
to hold his ground on the outside and did until lap three where Braaksma grabbed the lead
definitively. Tyler James of Oconomowoc then took second place from Wendt who would fall
in line in the third spot in front of Nick Wendt.
Caution fell on lap twenty after contact between Kurt Clapper and John Wasserburger
whose night would be over. The yellow flag slowed the field just three laps later for
debris. Last weeks Feature winner Aaron Wilke was sent to the rear for his
participation in Jerry Aubys spin to bring out the caution on lap twenty-eight. One
last caution would fly just after the restart for the spinning Brett Schmidt and Steve
Schlosser of Fond Du Lac.
As they came across the line Braaksma would get his first feature win of the season
followed by Tyler James, Andy Wendt, Nick Wendt and Don Gaserude of Fort Atkinson.
Heat race victories were awarded to rookie Tim Woollen of Sun Prairie and The Ford
Taurus of Mike Taylor. Quick time was 13.470 set by Jason Thoma of Jefferson
The Street Stock feature was the only caution free feature event of the evening. Dan
Schmidt grabbed the early lead followed by Grant Lindner and Dustin Ward. Fast Qualifier
Kevin Anderson (14.077) and second quick Don Trush if Sun Prairie quickly made their way
towards the front of the field. By the halfway point Schmidt had built a commanding lead.
Anderson would take second place from Lindner on lap fourteen but had no chance of
catching Schmidt. Brandon Riedner bullied his way around Ward for the fourth spot. At the
checkers Schmidt would take the honors followed by Anderson, Lindner, Riedner, and Trush.
Heat race winners were Dan Schmidt and John Remsik of Watertown.
In Hobby Stock feature action Travis Schneeberg of Cottage Grove and Andy Raley of Fall
River brought the field to speed. Raley would go wide in the first turn opening the door
for Alan Dorn to challenge and take the lead on lap five. Dan Gosda would bring out the
first caution on lap six. On the restart Dorn had current points leader and defending
track champion Larry Moen in his rear view mirror. Lapped traffic began to play a role on
lap twelve as Dorn had to weave through and tangled with Tim Lange of Dousman.
Caution fell on lap sixteen as Larry Moen lost his right rear wheel and collected fast
qualifier Jim Tate Jr. (15.298) who had nowhere to go. Dorn would hold onto the lead after
the restart. Nick Newton lost power and was coasting down the front straight as the
checkers flew causing everyone to swerve out of the way, except Mike Storkson in the
evenings sponsor 94.1 JJO car who plowed into Newton. Following Dorn across the
stripe were Tylor Schultz, Travis Schneeberg, Gary Haarklau, and William Stephenson.
Heat races went to William Stephenson of Cambridge and Coletta Gomes of Sun Prairie.
In the Bandit fast heat Ryan Hart of Edgerton tried the third groove outside of Ashley
Smith of Lake Mills and Tina Remsik of Watertown. Remsik was tapped from behind sending
her up the track into Smith. Hart touched wheels with Smith and was launched onto his side
and slid roof first into the outside retaining wall. This lead to a new mandate that there
will be no three wide racing in the Bandit Division.
Sean Bailey jumped out to the early lead in the 15-lap Bandit Feature followed by Ryan
Oetzel of Brodhead and Casey Strese of Watertown. Fast Qualifier Bryan Johnson (15.935 New
track record) and Ryan DeStefano began moving through the field making it three and nearly
four-wide at times.
Caution slowed the race on lap seven when both Johnson and DeStefano were sent to the
rear for failing to follow the mandate set forth at intermission. On the restart Bailey
maintained his lead while Brian Paulson began his charge from eighth place. Paulson would
come up just short and finish second. Oetzel, Zach Durham, and Rory Padfield of Stoughton
followed Bailey and Paulson across the line.
Heat race victories were scored by Kyle Watters and Sean Bailey both out of Sun Prairie,
Brian Paulson of Edgerton.
Dave Moore picked up his second win of the season in the Back-Up division. Contact on lap
4 between Ryan Oetzel of Brodhead and then Point Leader George Wachuta only served to
increase Moore lead. The official tally had Moore taking the win followed by Some
Remsik out of De Forest, George Wachuta, Wayne Hook of Oregon and Scott Hart from Beaver
Dam.
