July 7, 2006; Columbus, WI.
- Johnson Creek's Jerry Eckhardt took his front row starting spot to
victory lane en route to winning his first feature at Columbus 151
Speedway since 1988. Eckhardt would be forced to defend his top spot
throughout the late model main event. After taking the lead on lap
two, Eckhardt and the top five lined up single file until the only
caution on lap 13.
On the restart, Tim Woollen used the high groove to pull
alongside Eckhardt and challenge for the lead. Woollen hung in
strong on the high side for eight laps until he began to slide
backwards, giving second back to Clapper. Clapper tailed the leader
for five laps as he looked for an opening. On lap 28, Clapper drove
to the outside of Eckhardt and made it stick. The two battled for
four laps until Clapper became a little loose and Eckhardt reclaimed
the outright lead. Woollen slid by into second as Clapper dropped to
fifth. Woollen began looking for a way around Eckhardt as the laps
wound down, but Eckhardt was too strong. At the checkers, Eckhardt
was first followed by Woollen, Don Gaserude, Aaron Wilke and
Clapper. Wilke took fast time with a lap of 13.474 while heat
winners included Clapper and Butch Mierendorf.
Don Trush of Madison was tops in the Miller Lite 25 lap feature for
the street stocks. Tylor Schultz and Grant Lindner led the field to
green and Schultz took the early lead on the first lap. Caution flew
on lap four as top five competitors Lindner and Bobbi Bishofberger
made contact resulting in a flat tire for Bishofberger. On the
restart, Trush came from fifth to challenge Ed Jackson for second.
Trush used to the high groove and immediately charged alongside
Schultz for the lead. Two laps later, Trush grabbed the top spot and
began to open up a healthy lead. Meanwhile, point leader Kevin
Anderson was picking his way through the field, moving into second
on lap ten. The second of two cautions flew on lap 14, erasing the
lead for Trush. After the restart, Trush and Anderson began pulling
away from the pack and ran nose to tail to the checkered flag. At
the line, it was Trush, Anderson, Jackson, Schultz and Lindner
rounding out the top five. Anderson set fast time with a 14.141
second tour of the quarter mile. Heat winners were Tony Showers and
Anderson.
Whitewater's Lincoln Keeser made a tight points battle even tighter
in the hobby stock division by winning the Miller Genuine Draft 20
lap feature. Brian Piller and Travis Schneeberg led the pack to
green as the entire field ran in formation for the opening eight
laps. Piller finally took the lead with Keeser in tow for second on
lap nine. Keeser spent two laps studying Piller for a way around and
on lap 11 went to the high side and made the winning pass. The
remaining nine laps saw Keeser showing his strength as he muscled
out to big lead en route to winning the caution free event. At the
checkers, it was Keeser way out front, followed by Piller, Alan
Dorn, Andy Raley and Andrew Junget. Dorn took victory in the heat
race while Jim Tate took honors in qualifying with a lap of 15.380.
Rookie Jake Wasserburger of Poynette looked like a veteran by
winning the Sharp's 18 lap feature and setting fast time for the
bandits. Jake Vanoskey and Ryan Hart showed the way to green for the
18 car field and Vanoskey immediately took the lead into turn one.
Caution flew on lap three, which opened the door for Wasserburger to
enter the top five on the restart. Vanoskey continued to lead as
Wasserburger and Tom Bleecker sliced through the pack. On lap 12,
Wasserburger used the high line around Kyle Watters for third and
began working on Ashley Smith for second. Bleecker used the high
groove as well, staying on Wasserburger's rear bumper. The pair
cleared Smith for second and third and set sail for the leader.
Wasserburger caught Vanoskey with two to go, and once again used the
outside to make the pass. Bleecker did the same and moved into
second. At the line, it was Wasserburger out front followed by
Bleecker, Vanoskey, Smith and Sean Watters. Tiffany Desjarles
brought home the last chance while heat winners included Phil
Denikas, Eric Melchior and both Watters brothers.
In crazy back up action, Waunakee's Jug Her charged through the
field, trying to run down the leader, Steve Privett. Her caught
Privett with just over one lap remaining and took over the top spot.
Her took the win, followed by Privett and Rick Verdon.
Next Friday night at Columbus 151 Speedway is Dick Moore Memorial
night with extended feature racing, highlighted by a 50 lap late
model feature event. There will also be a treasure hunt for the
kids. Time trials begin at 6:30 with racing at 8 pm.
