-Marshall's Bill Retallick took top honors in the 50 lap Dick Moore
Memorial feature on a very warm summer evening this Friday at
Columbus 151 Speedway. Starting from the inside of row one,
Retallick led every lap of the event after surviving many challenges
from fellow competitors.
Retallick and Tim Woollen led the field to green, and after a
very auspicious start, including three cautions on the first lap,
Retallick grabbed the early lead. Almost immediately, Kurt Clapper
moved to the high side of Retallick to make his bid for the top
spot. Aaron Wilke tucked in behind Retallick as Clapper began
sliding back on the outside. Wilke took over second and Woollen
followed him underneath Clapper for third. Caution again flew on lap
13, and on the restart, point leader Dean Schultz used the
competition cone to pull alongside Retallick on the outside. Schultz
hung tough on the high side, making multiple attempts at the leader,
but never having quite enough to make the pass. The field would fall
in line behind the leaders and eventually, Schultz would join the
freight train to the checkers in second. Retallick survived one more
caution period with six laps to go and cross the line in first
followed by Schultz, Wilke, Woollen and Jim Syvrud. Ron Bishofberger
led the field in qualifying with a lap of 13.551 while heat winners
included Brent Knight and Retallick.
Rookie Tim Syvrud of Poynette claimed his first career feature win
in the 25 lap street stock feature. Tylor Schultz and Dan Gosda made
up the front row on the start. As the green flag dropped, Gosda
began to drop back while the inside line went forward. Syvrud began
his charge to the front, moving into the top five by lap six. Syvrud
made the high groove work for himself, as he began passing cars on
the outside, taking two spots in one lap and moving into third.
Meanwhile, fast qualifier Don Trush was using the way cleared by
Syvrud to follow him through the field. Syvrud again went to the
outside into second and pulled alongside Schultz for the lead.
Syvrud made quick work of the leader and took over the top spot and
immediately began pulling away from the pack. While this was
happening, point leader Kevin Anderson joined the party for the top
five and made his way through into second. After losing an engine
last week, Syvrud recovered to make a very strong showing and take a
commanding lead en route to the victory. At the checkers, it was
Syvrud way out front, followed by Anderson, Schultz, Grant Lindner
and Mike Amador. Heat winners included Zeke Bishofberger and Dan
Schmidt.
Fall River's Andy Raley led every lap of the hobby stock 20 lap
feature on his way to victory. After racing side by side for the
first lap with Travis Schneeberg, Raley grabbed the top spot and
almost immediately began pulling away. Meanwhile, the battle raged
behind him for the second spot with Dan Schmidt, Andrew Junget and
Mike Storkson all trying to get the position away from Schneeberg.
Junget managed to get inside Schneeberg and get the spot away from
him right before the only caution of the event flew on lap 14. This
erased the healthy lead of Raley, but the restart proved he was too
strong on this night, as he again moved out to a comfortable lead.
Larry Moen and Jim Tate moved into the top five as the laps wound
down, but were unable to make a challenge for the top two spots. At
the line, it was Raley, Junget, Moen, Tate and Alan Dorn rounding
out the top five. Tate held down fast time with a lap of 15.399.
Heat winners were Schneeberg and Dustin Ward.
With the top two in the bandit point standings absent, Stoughton's
Kyle Watters seized the opportunity to gain some ground by winning
the 18 lap feature event. Coming from the outside of row five,
Watters charged into the top five by lap two. Derek Childs showed
the way through the first five laps and to the first caution. On the
restart, Watters went to the high side of Childs for the lead, and
claimed it a lap later. Tom Bleecker followed Watters into second,
and Watters brother, Sean, moved into third. The leaders survived
through the final caution on lap 13 to run to the checkers with Kyle
Watters out front, followed by Bleecker, Sean Watters, Tim Bristol
and Kyle Klein. Jake Wasserburger took honors in qualifying with a
lap of 16.084. Ben Lewis won the last chance while Mike Heimann,
Bleecker and Bristol were heat winners.
In back up action, Jim Remsik, Jr dominated the field as he drove
away from the pack at the drop of the green en route to the
impressive win. He was followed by Jug Her in second and Ryan Oetzel
in third..
Next Friday at Columbus 151 Speedway is Q106 FM night with a live
broadcast from 6:30 till 8:00. There is also the 151 Speedway
drivers reunion. Time trials begin at 6:30 with racing at 8 pm.
