August 4, 2006; Columbus, WI. -
Bill Retallick of Marshall won his third feature of the season at
Columbus 151 Speedway on Friday. James Kruschke and Denny Stair led
the field of 18 late models to the green flag and the start of the
35 lap Miller Brewing feature. Kruschke grabbed the early lead on
the second lap with Retallick following into second. Retallick
scouted Kruschke for five laps, and on lap 8 went to the high side
for the lead.
The two battled for four laps until Retallick gained the
advantage into turn three and drove away. Jerry Eckhardt continued
the run around Kruschke on the high side and took over second a lap
later. Retallick encountered lapped traffic with five laps to go,
but was not slowed in his quest for the trophy. At the checkers,
Retallick owned a healthy lead followed by Eckhardt, Al Weishoff,
Ron Bishofberger and Andy Tomlinson rounding out the top five.
Tomlinson also owned fast time with a lap of 13.571 and heat winners
included Duane Deppe and Kevin Anderson.
Cottage Grove's Kevin Anderson came from the outside of row five to
claim victory in the 25 lap Miller Lite feature for the street
stocks. Tylor Schultz took the point on the first lap as Zeke
Bishofberger and Dale Weatherwax followed into second the third
respectively. The first of two cautions flew on lap five as
Weatherwax experienced problems. After the final caution five laps
later, Anderson moved into the top five and immediately began
working the high side. His first victim was Dennis Schwark for third
followed by Bishofberger for second. With three laps remaining,
Bishofberger saw the black flag for leaking fluid, which handed the
position over to Anderson. Anderson pulled up to Schultz's bumper
and on the final lap, went to the outside to make the pass. Schultz
got loose in turn two and Anderson had the advantage. The two
competitors came to the line with Anderson slightly out front and
Schultz in second. Don Trush, Schwark and Tim Syvrud made up the
rest of the top five. Anderson timed in fastest with lap of 14.190
in qualifying. Syvrud and Dan Gosda were heat race winners.
A very exciting finish in the Miller Genuine Draft hobby stock
feature saw Kyle Stark of Waterloo taking the checkers in first.
Mike Manley and Travis Schneeberg made up the front row on the start
with Manley grabbing the early lead. Brian Piller moved into second
and began shadowing the leader. Piller went high on lap three and
moved alongside Manley. They ran side by side until Piller finally
gained the advantage on lap seven with Jim Tate following around
into second. The only caution flew on lap 10, and Stark used the
restart to move into fourth. Larry Moen also used the restart to his
advantage moving underneath Tate for second. Tate began to lose grip
and fall back handing third to Stark. Once Moen owned second, he
started looking for a way around Piller for the lead. With three
laps to go, Moen looked to the outside and the two leaders ran side
by side, making heavy contact several times. Entering turn three on
the final lap, they made contact again and the right rear wheel of
Piller couldn't survive as it came off and the two slowed to a stop
in turn four. Stark inherited the lead and ran to the line in first
followed by Andy Raley, Tate, Alan Dorn and Schneeberg. Stark also
set fast time with a lap of 15.259 and Piller was the heat winner.
In bandit action, Jake Wasserburger of Poynette took honors in the
18 lap feature sponsored by Sharps. Wasserburger, who also set quick
time, came from the inside of row seven making his way through heavy
traffic. Casey Strese owned the early lead as the action behind was
fast and furious. Kody Hubred, Ashley Smith and Ryan Granzow all
battled for the second spot, with Granzow claiming it by lap 10.
Meanwhile Wasserburger had entered the top five. On lap 12, Granzow
took over the top spot as Wasserburger made it three wide for third.
He made the outside groove his own and charged to the lead in one
lap and immediately drove away from the pack. At the checkers, it
was Wasserburger for the win followed by Granzow, Nate Lacey, Kyle
Klein, and Tim Bristol. The last chance race was won by Tiffany
Desjarles and heat winners included Justin Belgum, Mike Heimann,
Hubred and Lacey.
In wild and crazy back up action, Jim Remsik Jr took the lead on lap
one and drove away to victory for his second of the season. He was
followed by Andy Ward and George Wachuta.
Next Friday, August 11, at Columbus 151 Speedway is a full program
