August 5, 2006; Columbus, WI. -
Madison's Dave Klein scored the victory in the Wisconsin 151
presented by Sign-1-1 as the ASA Late Model Series Northern Division
made their first visit to Columbus 151 Speedway this Saturday night.
Klein dominated the event, taking over the lead on lap 12 and never
relinquishing the position.
Klein and Bob Varney led the 20 car field to the drop of the
green and Varney held the initial lead on lap one. Klein used the
restart after the first caution to power under Varney for the top
spot as Varney dropped back to seventh. Klein opened up a healthy
advantage over the field as the battle raged behind him. Ten
different cautions would slow the pace of the event, each time
erasing any lead Klein held over the pack. But each time Klein would
drive out to a comfortable lead on the restart despite many
challenges for the top spot. Fast qualifier Michael Annett would
rebound from an early race incident to move into the second position
on lap 110. He made several attempts at a winning pass, but Klein
had just enough to hold him off. After 151 action packed laps, Klein
saw the checkers first followed by Annett in second and Jason Setser
in third. Jesse Smith was fourth and Eau Claire's Charlie Menard
finished fifth. Rounding out the top ten were Jack Smith, Wes
Griffith Jr, Derek Neville, Alison Quick and Mark Hartline. As
mentioned, Michael Annett set fast time establishing a new track
record with a lap of 13.118. Earlier in the evening, Mark Hartline
bested the field in the GM Performance Parts Shootout.
Running in conjunction with ASA Late Model Series were the street
stock division as well as the back up division. Scott Lawver of
Roscoe, IL led all 25 laps of the street stock feature en route to
the victory. Starting from the outside of row one, Lawver claimed
the lead on the first lap and never looked back during the caution
free race. Pole sitter Dan Gosda followed Lawver across the line in
second with Tim Syvrud, Kevin Anderson and Grant Linder rounding out
the top five. Syvrud set fast time for the street stocks with a
14.125 second tour of the quarter mile oval. Lawver and Lindner also
claimed heat race wins.
In back up action, Ryan Oetzel took top honors, using the high
groove all the way around the racetrack in his quest for the lead.
Andy Ward and George Wachuta finished second and third respectively.
