August 11, 2006; Columbus, WI. -
Current point leader Dean Schultz claimed his first feature win of
the season on Friday night at Columbus 151 Speedway. Schultz came
from deep in the field to grab the long awaited victory in the 2006
season.
Steve Schlosser and Duane Deppe led the field of 19 late models
to the start with Schlosser taking the early lead out of turn two.
Al Weishoff followed Schlosser under Deppe for second. Meanwhile
Schultz, who started outside row six, was picking his way through
the pack, entering the top five on lap 13. Two laps later, Schlosser
got extremely loose exiting turn four and spun around on the front
stretch. A four car pileup ensued including the machines of Gerry
Junget, Aaron Wilke, Don Gaserude and Bill Retallick. The evening
was over for all four cars as the race was red flagged to untangle
the mess. When the race was finally restarted, Justin Schultz
inherited the lead. Dean Schultz used the restart to charge
alongside Justin Schultz for the top spot. The two raced side by
side until another caution flew three laps later. Dean Schultz was
credited with the lead and he decided to keep it. The remainder of
the event saw three more cautions, and each time Dean Schultz would
drive out to a commanding lead. At the checkers, it was Dean Schultz
out front followed by John Wasserburger, Justin Schultz, Ron
Bishofberger and Tim Woollen. Aaron Wilke set fast time on the
evening with a lap of 13.436. Heat winners included Butch Mierendorf
and Brent Knight.
Sun Prairie's Dan Gosda grabbed his first career street stock
feature win at Columbus 151 coming from the pole to take the
victory. Mike Amador joined Gosda in row one as Gosda owned the lead
on the first lap. Tylor Schultz followed Gosda under Amador for
second as Grant Lindner stayed in line for third. On lap three,
Lindner went to the high side around Schultz and pulled up alongside
Gosda. The two competitors waged an intense side by side battle over
the next 15 laps until lap 20 when Lindner began losing grip on the
outside. This handed the lead back over to Gosda as Lindner battled
to stay strong on the high side. Gosda survived a late caution to
take the checkers in first. Schultz, Bobbi Bishofberger, Dennis
Schwark and Lindner rounded out the to five. Tim Syvrud set the mark
in qualifying with a lap of 14.052 while heat winners included Gosda
and Amador.
Andy Junget of Baraboo grabbed another feature win in the hobby
stock division coming from the outside of row two to win the event.
Brian Piller and Lincoln Keeser led the pack to green and Piller
took the initial lead. Junget went to work in the outside groove as
he drove by Keeser for second. Junget set his sights on Piller and
two laps later pulled alongside him. Junget made quick work of the
leader and charged out front in control of the race. Junget never
looked back as he pulled out to a comfortable lead en route to the
win. Piller was second followed by Alan Dorn, Keeser and Larry Moen.
Fast time was held down by Kyle Stark with a lap of 15.190 while
Gary Haarklau and Keeser took heat race wins.
The Watters brothers, Sean and Kyle, made it a one-two finish in the
18 lap bandit feature. The duo started alongside each other in row
four and eventually met up again at the front of the pack. After a
first lap melee, Casey Strese was the leader with Sean Watters
pulling in right behind him. Two laps later, Watters went by the
leader as his brother entered the top five. Kyle Watters made quick
work of the rest of the top group and pulled up to the rear bumper
of his brother half way through the race. The two raced nose to tail
the remainder of the event with Sean Watters holding his younger
brother at bay. As the checkered flag waved, it was Sean Watters
followed by Kyle Watters with a big lead over Kyle Klein, Ashley
Smith and Kyle Smith rounding out the top five. Rookie Jake
Wasserburger set a new track record in qualifying with a lap of
15.900. Heat winners included Hunter Schultz, Tiffany Desjarles,
Sean Watters and Jacob Vanoskey.
Also on hand for the evening's festivities was the Formula Indy
Racing Association. Vern Brown continued his winning ways at
Columbus 151 with another victory in the 20 lap feature. John
Zeilinga and James Bass made up the front row on the start as
Zeilinga grabbed the early lead. Lap two saw Brown enter the top
five as he began to pick off cars a lap at a time. By lap eight,
Brown had caught the leader Zeilinga, and after a one lap battle,
Brown took control. Brown drove away to the feature win followed by
Tim Roach in second and Zeilinga in third.
Rounding out the evenings events were the wild and crazy back up
cars. Jim Remsik Jr and Wayne Hook lead the field on the start and
Remsik immediately took the point and drove away with it. At the
line, it was Remsik with a half track lead over George Wachuta and
Dave Moore.
Next Friday, August 18, at Columbus 151 Speedway is the Columbus
Fire Department Foam races including a gauntlet race. This is along
with a full program of events in all divisions. Time trials begin at
6:30 with racing at 8 pm.
