September 1, 2006; Columbus, WI. -
While Dean Schultz was winning his second feature in a row and all
but sewing up the late model championship, Rob Retallick was locking
up the title in the Pepsi Triple 60 Series with his 8th place
finish. Mike Taylor and Brent Knight made up the front row on the
start of the 60 lap main event with Taylor grabbing the initial lead
into turn one.
The inside lane followed Taylor to the point while Knight began
falling back. Al Weishoff went to the high side of Jim Kruschke for
second while the field behind them jockeyed for position. Weishoff
made the pass for second and continued his charge pulling alongside
the leader, Taylor. On lap 10, Weishoff made the pass for the lead
as John Wasserburger followed him into second. After a caution on
lap 19, Dean Schultz used the restart to pull up beside Weishoff and
challenge for the lead. Schultz made quick work of the leader and
took over the top spot. Schultz began to run away from the pack as
he opened up a very healthy lead. The remaining 40 laps ran caution
free and Schultz crossed the line in first followed by Weishoff, Ron
Bishofberger, Wasserburger and Scott Patrick. With his eighth place
finish, Rob Retallick finished five points ahead of Dean Schultz for
the Pepsi Triple 60 Series title. Jerry Junget was third and John
Wasserburger fourth in the final standings. On the evening,
Wasserburger set quick time for the late models with a lap of
13.414. Heat winners included Terry Sauer and Carey John.
Cambria's Dale Weatherwax won his first feature of the season in
the 25 lap main event for the street stocks. Joe Roatch and Tylor
Schultz led the field to green as Weatherwax began his quest from
the inside of row five. Roatch took over the top spot on the second
lap. Weatherwax entered the top five on lap four just as Grant
Lindner began looking to the high line for third. Lindner was unable
to hold his position as he fell back and Schultz took to the high
side of the leader. Roatch and Schultz raced side by side for a
couple laps until Schultz got extremely loose and the pack jumbled
up behind him. This
allowed Weatherwax to charge into second and begin shadowing the
leader. The first caution flew on lap 16 and Weatherwax used the
restart to pull up beside Roatch for the lead. Weatherwax claimed
the point a lap later and after surviving one more caution,
Weatherwax was able to defend the top spot and bring home the
checkers in first. Don
Trush, Kevin Anderson, Roatch and Schultz rounded out the top five.
Dan Schmidt was fast qualifier with a lap of 14.276 while heat
winners were Roatch and Zeke Bishofberger.
Lincoln Keeser of Whitewater won an exciting finish to the 20 lap
hobby stock feature event. Brian Piller and Travis Schneeberg paced
the field at the start as Piller took the early lead into turn three
of the first lap. Keeser followed into second and began looking for
a way around the leader. That way opened up on lap seven as Piller
got very loose in turn four, allowing Keeser to fly by for the lead
with Andy Junget moving into second. Junget tailed the leader until
lap 14
when he went to the outside of Keeser. The two competitors battled
side by side for the remaining six laps. As they exited turn four on
the final lap, they made heavy contact but were still able to
maintain control. At the line, it was Keeser by a nose followed by
Junget, Jim Tate, Alan Dorn and Andy Raley. Raley also set fast time
on the evening with a lap of 15.228 while Piller won the heat race.
Stoughton's Kyle Watters got the evening sweep by winning the
bandit feature while also winning his heat race and setting fast
time in qualifying. Michael Heimann and Linda Carignan made up the
first row for the 18 lap bandit feature. Carignan lead lap one as
Kyle Klein charged into the top five and into second by lap four.
Klein moved under Carignan for the lead on lap eight just as Watters
entered the top five. Three laps later, Watters was in second and he
immediately looked to the outside of Klein for the lead. Watters
made the winning pass with three laps remaining and ran to the
checkers. At the
stripe, it was Watters followed by Klein, Jake Vanoskey, Jake
Wasserburger and Tim Bristol. As mentioned, Watters also held quick
time with a lap of 16.019. Heat winners included Bud Reidner, Klein
and Watters while Ashley Smith won the last chance race.
In wild and crazy back up action, Ryan Oetzel extended his point
lead by winning the 8 lap feature. Andy Ward held the point while
Oetzel shadowed him around the quarter mile oval. Ward spun on lap
six, handing the lead over to Oetzel. Oetzel ran away with the win
while Ward finished second followed by Rick Verdon in third.
