Pepsi Triple 60's Round Two
By Andrew Schaller |
June 2, 2006; Columbus, WI.
Deerfield's Rob Retallick survived a caution filled 60 lap late
model feature to claim victory in round two of the Pepsi Triple 60's
series at Columbus 151 Speedway. Retallick led all 60 laps en route
to the win, but there was plenty of action happening throughout the
event behind him. Retallick gained the top spot on the opening lap
and began pulling out to a healthy lead immediately. The first of
nine yellow flags flew on lap ten and the lead was erased. On the
restart, using the new commitment cone policy, Jerry Eckhardt would
move into second behind Retallick.
He was followed by Don Gaserude and John Wasserburger into third
and fourth respectively. The longest stretch of green flag racing
ensued as the top five stayed nose to tail until lap 32 when the
second caution came over the speedway. On the restart, Kurt Clapper
moved up to challenge outside of Eckhardt for second. Clapper was
unable to make the pass and began to fall back until his spin with
Wasserburger on lap 41 brought out the fifth caution flag. Dean
Schultz would challenge for second on the restart, and he and
Eckhardt got together in turn four and began falling back when yet
another caution flew. This put Gaserude on the rear bumper of
Retallick in second followed by Aaron Wilke and Jim Syvrud. Clapper
came from seventh to challenge on the restart buy only managed to
slide into third behind Gaserude. After one more restart, Schultz
got inside Clapper and took third away while Gaserude looked for a
line around Retallick. The final sixteen laps went caution free as
Gaserude filled up the mirror of Retallick, but was unable to make a
pass. At the checkered flag, Retallick took top honors followed by
Gaserude, Schultz, Clapper and Wasserburger. Wilke owned fast time
for the late models and heat winners included Rob Retallick and
Justin Schultz.
Dan Schmidt of Watertown grabbed the lead on lap 12 of the 25 lap
street stock feature and took it to victory. Dan Gosda and Tony
Showers led the field to green as Gosda took the early lead out of
turn two. The inside line followed Gosda as Zeke Bishofberger and
Grant Lindner moved into second and third. A lap later, Schmidt
drove inside Lindner taking away the third spot. Dale Weatherwax
began making his move to the front, as on lap ten he looked to the
high side of Schmidt for third. The event's only caution flew on lap
11, and on the restart, Schmidt moved outside Bishofberger to
challenge for second. He continued his charge in the outside groove,
moving past Bishofberger and challenging for the lead on Gosda.
Schmidt finalized the pass on lap 12 with Weatherwax in tow for
second. The pair began pulling away while Kevin Anderson worked his
way into third. At the line, it was Schmidt and Weatherwax with a
big lead followed by Anderson, Gosda and Bobbi Bishofberger rounding
out the top five. Tim Syvrud turned in quick time and heat winners
were Gosda and Lindner.
Jim Tate of Watertown came from the outside of row two to take the
win the 20 lap hobby stock feature event. The first five laps of the
race saw the entire field stay side by side, until pole sitter Brian
Piller got slightly loose and Travis Schneeberg grabbed the top
spot. Tate followed into second and immediately took the high groove
around Schneeberg. After the only caution of the event on lap nine,
Larry Moen took second from Schneeberg and moved up to challenge for
the lead. But Tate was too strong and at the checkers, it was Tate
in first followed by Moen, Lincoln Keeser, Andrew Junget and Alan
Dorn. Moen held down quick time and Dustin Ward took the heat win.
Hartford's Kyle Klein took the lead on lap four of the bandit
feature and never looked back en route to the win. Casey Strese and
Kevin Weaver made up the front row and stayed side by side for the
top spot until they hooked bumpers down the back stretch and brought
out the first caution of the event. This handed the lead over to
Klein with Ben Monday right behind in second. The final caution flew
on lap eight and set up a green flag stretch to the finish that saw
Greg Ovadal make a mad dash to the front. Coming from the outside of
row seven on the start, Ovadal moved into the top five on lap nine,
taking two spots in one lap and moving into fourth. Two laps later,
he was into second and looking to rundown the leader. Ovadal caught
Klein with three laps remaining, just looking for an opening to get
by. As the white flag flew, Ovadal looked to the high side and the
two slammed their way through turns three and four. At the line,
Klein owned the top spot, followed by Ovadal, Bud Reidner, Tim
Bristol and Monday. Ashley Smith took honors in qualifying with a
lap of 16.213. Heat winners included Josh Bisbee, Ovadal and Cody
Strese.
In back up action, Rick Verdon took the lead on lap one and drove
away for the win followed by George Wachuta and Dave Moore.
On hand this week at 151 Speedway was the Milwaukee Stock Car Racing
Association, a division of restored vintage race cars. Dave Waldron
took his 1934 Ford Coupe to victory in the 15 feature followed by
Merlin Armstrong in his 1926 Ford Sedan.
Next Friday at Columbus 151 Speedway is the first half of the 2006
Summer Rumble. This is a two part event with the second half at
Jefferson Speedway. Time trials begin at 6:15 with racing at 8 pm.
