DeJope Summer Rumble Title
By Andrew Schaller |
June 16, 2006; Columbus, WI.
- After finishing fifth in the Johnson's Sausage Shoppe 50 lap
feature, Aaron Wilke of Waterloo captured the Summer Rumble title at
Columbus 151 Speedway. Wilke combined his finish with the second
place run at Jefferson Speedway the week before to take the overall
title ahead of John Ovadal, Jr. Dane's Kurt Clapper took home the
trophy as the top finisher in the 50 lap event.
Clapper and Clayton Braaksma led the 20 car field to the start.
Clapper owned the top spot out of turn two on the first lap and held
on to it for every lap. Jeff Steenbergen followed Clapper into
second as Wilke and Ovadal began trying to work through traffic to
the front. By lap five, Ovadal was shadowing the top five with Wilke
in tow. The leaders ran nose to tail till lap 19 when caution flew
over the speedway. Newly instituted under caution a commitment cone
is utilized and drivers are allowed to move up into the outside lane
to challenge for positions, with the leader remaining unchallenged.
Wilke used this policy to his advantage moving into the top five.
With ten laps remaining, Dean Schultz began passing cars on the
outside and moving into the top five. At the stripe, it was Clapper
out front followed by Steenbergen, Don Gaserude, Schultz and Wilke.
Ron Bishofberger set fast time for the late models with a lap of
13.429. Heat winners included Brent Knight, Ken Olson and Tyler
James. Andy Wendt claimed the 25 lap last chance event.
James Helmer of Oconomowoc grabbed the lead on lap seven under
caution and brought home the victory in the 30 lap street stock
feature event. Madison's Don Trush combined two second place
finishes to capture the Summer Rumble title in the division. A
strong field of racers came to green as Tylor Schultz took the
initial lead. Meanwhile, Trush was mired in heavy traffic deep in
the field while Summer Rumble leader Eaan Carson ran third. The
caution flew on lap seven, and it was determined that the leader
Schultz was leaking fuel which handed the lead over to Helmer. Also
under the same caution, Carson was relegated to the pit area to fix
body damage acquired in the events leading to the yellow flag. After
two cautions on consecutive laps, Terry Wangsness tailed the leader
in second followed by Trush in third. Trush was able to use the
restart policy to come from outside the top ten to race with the
leaders. With five laps remaining, Wangsness began showing heavy
smoke and was forced to retire, handing over second position to
Trush. Helmer ran unchallenged to the checkers from there followed
by Trush, Dale Weatherwax, Dan Schmidt and Tim Syvrud. Helmer also
claimed the top spot in his heat race along with other winners Brian
Paulson and Ken Scott. Kevin Anderson owned quick time with a lap of
14.072.
Lincoln Keeser did all he could to win the Summer Rumble for the
hobby stocks by winning the 20 lap feature event, but it wasn't
enough as Jim Robinson finished second to claim the overall title.
Jim Lampen grabbed the early lead and held it until the only caution
of the race on lap eight. On the restart, Keeser came from third to
the outside and immediately passed second place Andrew Junget and
began working on Lampen. Three laps later, Keeser was out front.
Meanwhile, Robinson was working his way through the field and by lap
13 was in fourth only needing to pass one more car to claim the
Summer Rumble title. A lap later, he got his wish and moved into
third around Junget. With five to go, Lampen lost control into the
infield handing second to Robinson. At the checkered flag, it was
Keeser in front followed by Robinson, Junget, Alan Dorn and Jim
Tate. Quick qualifier was Larry Moen and heat winners were Lampen
and Dustin Ward.
The Watters boys showed their strength in the bandit division as
Kyle took top honors in the 18 lap feature while brother Sean won
the overall Summer Rumble title. Sean combined a third at Columbus
with a second at Jefferson to take the trophy. Casey Strese and Zak
Czeszynski led the field to green and Strese took the early lead
into the first turn. The only caution of the event flew on the first
lap putting Kyle Watters on the rear bumper of the leader Strese. On
the restart, Strese floated a little high in turn four and Watters
seized the opportunity to take the lead. Watters never looked back
en route to the checkered flag for the win. Rounding out the top
five were Nate Lacey, Sean Watters, Tom Bleecker and Bud Riedner.
Greg Ovadal took honors in qualifying with a 16.063 second tour of
the quarter mile. Jacob Vanoskey won the last chance race while Ryan
Oetzel claimed the consolation. Heat winners included Tom Bleecker,
Kyle Klein, Ben Monday and brothers Ben and Matt Reuter.
In crazy back up division action, Ryan Oetzel took the early lead
and drove away from the field to win the feature. He was followed by
George Wachuta in second and Jug Her in third.
Next Friday at Columbus 151 Speedway is Brothers of the Third World
night including a roll over contest following the night's regular
schedule of events. Time trials are at 6:30 with racing at 8 pm.
