By Andrew Schaller |
June 23, 2006; Columbus, WI.
- Marshall's Bill Retallick brought home the victory in the 35 lap
main event sponsored by the Brothers of the Third Wheel. Bill Gray
and Brent Knight paced the field of 18 late models to the drop of
the green flag. Gray claimed the top spot on lap two with Knight
falling in behind for second. Lap six saw Ron Bishofberger shadowing
the top five in sixth.
Bishofberger made his move a lap later around Duane Deppe and
into fifth. Meanwhile, Gray began pulling out to a healthy lead
until lap 13 when the first caution of the event erased his
advantage. On the restart, Retallick used the competition cone to
move into second and immediately begin challenging the leader, Gray.
On lap 18 Retallick used the high groove to pull alongside Gray
until lap 20 when he completed the pass for the lead. Bishofberger
followed Retallick around Gray on the outside into second. Laps
23-26 were marred by three separate cautions, and on the final
restart, Dean Schultz moved to the outside of Bishofberger and
charged to the front around Retallick. But just as Schultz was about
to clear Retallick for the top spot, he became slightly loose and
fell back beside Bishofberger. Retallick took back the lead and ran
to the checkers. At the line, it was Retallick out front followed by
Schultz, Bishofberger, Bill Niles and Justin Schultz. Aaron Wilke
held down fast time with a lap of 13.361. Heat winners included
Retallick and Jerry Eckhardt.
Ed Jackson of Madison claimed his first career street stock feature
win in the 25 feature for that division. Dan Gosda and Tylor Schultz
brought the field to green and pack ran in formation for the opening
six laps. Gosda gained the advantage on lap six while Jackson and
Schultz battled for side by side for second. Jackson took control of
the spot on lap nine and one lap later moved to the high side of
Gosda for the lead. The two waged an intense battle for the top spot
until lap 16 when Jackson moved out front. Don Trush followed
Jackson into second. Point leader Kevin Anderson came from his last
row starting spot into third on lap 20 and the three leaders began
pulling away. The only caution flew on lap 21 and the pack was
bunched up together for the final five laps. On the restart Anderson
went to the high side of Trush for second. As the white flag flew,
Anderson got a great run to pull alongside Jackson and the two ran
to the checkers side by side. At the line, Jackson owned a very
slight advantage over Anderson with Trush in third. Dale Weatherwax
and Bobbi Bishofberger rounded out the top five. Anderson owned
quick time while Dan Schmidt and Tylor Schultz claimed heat wins.
Watertown's Brian Piller took his front row starting spot to victory
in the 20 lap hobby stock feature event. Piller and Dustin Ward led
the field to the start and the two did battle for the top spot until
lap four when Piller claimed the lead. Piller survived two cautions,
staying out front when on lap 13 Alan Dorn began his challenge for
the lead. Dorn used the restart after the second caution to pull
alongside Piller and the two ran side by side, trading the lead.
With one lap remaining, Dorn began losing grip on the high side and
Piller took back the lead with Larry Moen moving into second. At the
checkers, Piller was tops followed by Moen, Dorn, Jim Tate and
Travis Schneeberg. Moen took honor in qualifying with a lap of
15.335. Schneeberg owned the heat race.
Tim Bristol of Watertown held off the challenge of Greg Ovadal to
take the prize in the 18 lap bandit feature. Bristol came from row
five on the start to move into the top five on lap four. By lap
five, Bristol was already challenging Chris Hart for the top spot. A
lap later, it was Bristol out front with Ovadal in tow. Ovadal began
his quest to take over the lead, trying every move possible to get
by the leader. The two even made contact several times. Bud Riedner
joined the fray with only three laps remaining and the three leaders
began to bump and bang each other, all looking for an advantage. But
Bristol would stay strong and claim victory followed by Ovadal,
Riedner, Ryan Hart and Kyle Watters. Watters also was quick
qualifier on the evening with a lap of 16.188. Ben Lewis took the
consolation while Jacob Vanosky won the last chance race. Heat
winners were Ryan Oetzel, Vanosky, Riedner and Jake Wetherell.
The night's regular schedule was rounded out by a very wild and
crazy back up feature. Steve Privett survived the madness to take
the win followed by Rick Verdon and David Moore.
Next Friday at Columbus 151 Speedway is the Cheerwine Cherry Bomb 50
highlighted by a 50 lap late model feature. There will also be
extended features in the street stock and hobby stock divisions as
well. After the racing action is concluded, fireworks provided by
Thundercat will fill the sky above the speedway. Pepsi will also be
on hand with lots of giveaways for the fans. Time trials begin at
6:30 with racing at 8 pm.
