July 13, 2007; Columbus, WI. -
Juneau's Dean Schultz scrapped his way to his second win of the
season in the 35 lap late model feature at Columbus 151 Speedway.
Rocky Breezer and Bobbi Bishofberger started on the front row as the
two competitors battled side by side for the opening three laps. On
lap four, Bishofberger slipped a little and made contact with Al
Weishoff, who was running in third. The two drivers slid up out of
the groove as the yellow flag waved.
The restart saw Breezer in the lead with Schultz right behind and
Ron Bishofberger to his outside. As the green waved, Ron
Bishofberger charged to the outside of Breezer, looking to lead.
Bishofberger hung tough while battling Breezer and Schultz in the
high groove, but on lap 11 he lost grip in turn two and washed out
losing three spots to fifth. As soon as Schultz was clear, he began
his assault on Breezer for the top spot. Schultz momentarily grabbed
the lead on lap 15, but Breezer wouldn't give up as he moved back to
the inside of Schultz. They battled side by side for the next nine
laps, making contact several times. Finally, Schulz took control and
immediately began to pull away. Schultz held a large lead as he
crossed under the checkers in first followed by Breezer, Jerry Auby,
Ron Bishofberger and Chad Reimer.
Don Gaserude owned fast time on the evening with a lap of 13.485.
Take victories in heat race action were Breezer and Jim Syvrud.
The 30 lap street stock feature saw pole sitter Dan Gosda of
DeForest claim victory. Starting alongside Brandon Riedner, Gosda
finally took the lead after a great side by side battle over the
first six laps. Riedner became loose on lap eight, sliding back into
a race for third with Dan Schmidt, also allowing Johnny Robinson to
move into second. A lap later, Schmidt and Riedner got together and
brought out the first of two cautions as Schmidt experienced a flat
right front tire. Both drivers were relegated to the pit area for
repairs as third place
was handed to Tim Syvrud. A very good battle for second ensued on
the restart between Robinson and Syvrud. The struggle for second
continued through another caution on lap 15 until Syvrud finally
gained the second position on lap 25. Syvrud immediately closed
onto Gosda's rear bumper as he looked for a line around the leader.
But Gosda stymied each attempt as he saw the checkers first with
Syvrud close behind. Rounding out the top five were Jim Rohrbeck,
Zeke
Bishofberger and Ed Jackson. Don Trush set quick time with a lap of
14.034. Heat winners included Riedner and Derek Childs.
After a wild finish, Tim Lange of Dousman was awarded the win in
the 20 lap hobby stock feature event. Starting on the front row,
Mike Storkson grabbed the lead on lap four from pole sitter Nick
Newton. Alex Papini flew around Newton on the outside a lap later to
claim second. Papini immediately went to work on Storkson for the
top spot. Papini shadowed Storkson as he pulled up to his bumper
with seven laps to go. They made contact a couple times as Storkson
held his
advantage. As they entered turn three on the final lap, they made
contact one final time sending Storkson into the outside wall. The
incident moved Storkson and Papini to the back of the pack. Lange,
who was running third, inherited the lead and the win as the
checkers flew. Kyle Stark, Jim Tate, Dustin Ward and Eric Gardner
rounded out the top five. Andy Raley paced the field in qualifying
with a lap of 15.139 while heat winners were Papini and Storkson.
Waunakee's Gary Stark padded his point lead by winning the 18 lap
bandit feature event. Starting from the outside of row six, Stark
began his trek to the front as Matt Reuter took the initial lead. A
lap later, Matt Klenz moved inside Reuter to the front. Meanwhile,
Josh Bisbee was slicing his way through traffic to second. On lap
six, Bisbee used the inside line to get around Klenz for the top
position with Mike Clapper following into second. Following a
caution on lap nine, Stark entered the top five. Using the high
side, Stark began picking off cars until he was next to Bisbee for
the lead. Stark took control of the top spot on lap 13 and cruised
to the win. Crossing the line behind Stark was Kyle Watters, Bisbee,
Tom Berens and Clapper. Stark also set fast time in qualifying with
a 15.643 second tour of the quarter mile. Taking heat wins were
Clapper and Kyle Watters.
In wild and crazy back up action, Jim Remsik Jr of DeForest took
honors in the 8 lap feature. Wayne Hook took the early lead on the
first lap with Andy Ward right behind for second. Ward moved past
Hook to take control of the lead on lap three. A lap later, Hook
brought out the caution after making hard contact with the turn four
wall. Remsik shadowed Ward on the restart until lap six when Ward
spun to the infield, handing the lead to Remsik. Remsik charged to
the checkers followed by George Wachuta and Dave Moore.
Also on hand for the evening was the Formula Indy Racing
Association. Vern Brown of Waunakee continued his dominance at
Columbus 151 Speedway by winning the 20 lap feature. Lyle Phillips
took the initial lead on lap one until John Zelinga maneuvered under
Phillips to take away the top spot. Zelinga began to pull away from
the pack as Brown and Grant Greenfield did battle for second. Brown
made the pass for second on lap ten and began to close the gap on
the leader. Brown finally caught Zelinga as the while flag flew. As
the leaders encountered lapped traffic, Brown pulled even with
Zelinga for the lead. As they crossed the line side by side, it was
Brown with the win by inches over Zelinga. Rounding out the top
five were Greenfield, Tim Roach and Phillips.
