Aaron Falbe Runs Down
a Win at Columbus 151
by Jim Remsik |
August 10, 2007; Columbus, WI. -
Beaver Dam's Aaron Falbe visited feature victory lane for the first
time in four years as he claimed the 35 lap late model feature at
Columbus 151 Speedway. Shaun Scheel and Mike Taylor made up the
front row at the drop of the green as Taylor took the early lead
exiting turn two. Taylor immediately opened up a healthy advantage
as Kurt Clapper maneuvered his mount into second.
Clapper caught Taylor on lap ten and started to look for a way
around the leader. While the leaders battled for the top spot,
Falbe, Jerry Eckhardt and Dean Schultz entered the top five and
started to run down Taylor and Clapper. Lap by lap, Falbe shortened
the distance between himself and the leaders until finally catching
them on lap 26. Falbe drove to the high side of Clapper and motored
past into second. Falbe then set his sights on Taylor as he charged
alongside the leader. Falbe cleared Taylor for the lead with five
laps to go and with Schultz right behind for second. Schultz spent
the remaining laps looking for a lane around Falbe, but the
opportunity never came as Falbe ran to the
checkers for the win. Schultz followed in second with Steve
Dobbratz, Taylor and Eckhardt rounding out the top five. Schultz
also claimed top honors in qualifying with a lap of 13.623 while
heat race winners included Taylor and Al Weishoff.
Ed Jackson of Madison led every lap en route to his win in the 30
lap street stock feature. Jackson took control of the event on the
first lap and immediately started to pull away from the pack. While
Jackson was leading, Zeke Bishofberger drove into second and began
to distance himself from the field as well. The first of three
cautions flew on lap 14 and erased the lead Jackson enjoyed. After
a second caution on the restart, racing resumed with Jackson out
front and Bishofberger right behind. Bret Schmidt moved to the
outside to challenge for the second spot as he raced side by side
with Bishofberger until the final caution flew with five laps to
go. Schmidt again went to the outside on the restart, looking to
gain second spot. But as the checkers flew, it was Jackson holding
strong in first followed by Bishofberger, Schmidt, Jim Rohrbeck and
Tim Syvrud. Schmidt owned fast time on the night with a lap of
14.095. Jackson also claimed a heat race win along with Tylor
Schultz.
Dustin Ward of Beaver Dam dominated the 20 lap hobby stock
feature enroute to his victory in the event. Ward grabbed the lead
on lap two from Ben Monday as Gary Pashley and Kyle Stark moved into
second and third. After the only caution of the race on lap three,
Ward pulled out to a large lead as he was never seriously challenged
for the top spot. Pashley and Stark waged a great battle for second
with Pashley being able to fend off Stark's advances. Rounding out
the top five were Andy Raley and Larry Moen.
Raley was quick qualifier while Jim Tate took the heat race win.
Poynette's Jake Wasserburger made it a clean sweep on the night as
he took the wins in his heat race and the 18 lap bandit feature as
well as setting fast time. Wasserburger began his trek to the front
of the feature field from the inside of row seven while Dave Schmidt
took the early lead. The battle raged behind Schmidt with
competitors going three wide fighting for position. Schmidt held
the lead through the only caution of the event on lap eight, but on
the restart, Wasserburger, who had climbed into the top five a lap
earlier, cruised
by the leaders and took over the top spot. Wasserburger drove away
to the win followed by Stephen Scheel, Matt Klenz, Schmidt and Kyle
Watters. As mentioned, Wasserburger also set quick time and won his
heat race. Other heat race winners included Tiffany Desjarles and
Gary Stark.
In wild and crazy back up action, Andy Ward of Madison took the
victory in the 8 lap feature event. Ward took control of the race
at the drop of the green and never looked back. Following Ward
across the line were Bruce Havel and George Wachuta.
Next Friday, August 17, is Dick Moore Memorial night with
