Greg Bowers Best In
Dick Moore Memorial
by Jim Remsik |
August 17, 2007; Columbus, WI. -
Waterloo's Greg Bowers owned all 50 laps of the Dick Moore Memorial
late model feature event at Columbus 151 Speedway on Friday night.
Starting alongside Al Weishoff on the front row, Bowers took control
of the top spot on the first lap while Weishoff pulled in behind him
for second. Bowers struggled with the handling for the first few
laps until the car hooked up and he started to pull away slightly
from the pack.
Current point leader Dean Schultz was shadowing the top five
until mechanical problems forced him to retire on lap five. Bowers
continued to lead with Weishoff holding second and Jason Deppe right
behind in third. Caution flew over the speedway on lap 23 and the
field was once again bunched up for the restart. Andy Wendt used
the
cone on the restart to position himself into third behind Weishoff
while Bowers once again opened up a healthy advantage. Wendt tried
several times to get by Weishoff, finally doing so on lap 38.
With 12 laps remaining, Wendt began to run down the leader,
Bowers. Wendt finally caught Bowers with two laps to go, but was
unable to make a winning pass as Bowers crossed under the checkers
in first. Wendt followed in second with Weishoff, Deppe and Jerry
Eckhardt rounding out the top five. Steve Dobbratz scored quick
time on the night with
a lap of 13.465. Jeff Falbe, Steve Schlosser and Jerry Auby secured
heat race wins while Shaun Scheel took the semi feature victory.
Jim Rohrbeck of Portage led every lap en route to victory in the
30 lap street stock feature event. Starting outside Derek Childs,
Rohrbeck claimed the lead entering turn one of the first lap.
Dustin Ward followed Rohrbeck around the outside of Childs into
second with Scott Riedner moving into third. Rohrbeck immediately
opened up a good lead as Riedner maneuvered past Ward into second on
lap four. Riedner began his chase of Rohrbeck as they entered lapped
traffic on
lap ten. Riedner followed the leader through heavy traffic, looking
for an opening, but not finding any room. With three laps
remaining, the two leaders found some open track to race. Riedner
looked high and low for a lane to pass, but Rohrbeck managed to hold
him off and take the win with Riedner a close second. A great
battle for third resulted in Ward claiming the spot followed by Dale
Weatherwax and Tim Syvrud. Bret Schmidt once again set fast time in
qualifying with a
lap of 13.948 while heat winners included Tylor Schultz, Riedner
and Rohrbeck.
Watertown's Jim Tate charged through the field to claim his
second win of the season in the 20 lap hobby stock feature. Chester
Williams and Terry Sauer paced the field to green with Williams
grabbing the initial lead. The inside line followed Williams as
Sauer struggled to gain control of his machine. Nick Newton moved
to second with Willie Schreiber driving to third. Tate moved into
the top five just as the caution flew on lap seven. On the restart,
Tate slid into third and immediately looked to take second from
Schreiber. Schreiber peeked to the inside of Williams for the lead
as the two made contact which allowed Tate to breeze by on the
outside and take over the top position. It was over from there as
Tate drove away to the win followed by Schreiber, Dustin Ward,
Williams and Kyle Stark. Stark set a new
track record in qualifying with a lap of 15.051. In heat race
action, winners were Schreiber and Gerry Junget.
Waunakee's Gary Stark increased his point lead in the bandit
division with his win in the 18 lap feature. Stark began his trek
to the front from the outside of row seven, entering the top five on
lap four. Stark made quick work of the competitors, climbing to
third on lap six and moving into second two laps later. Stark set
his sights on Kimberly Falk, the leader. Falk surrendered the spot
a lap later and Stark set sail on the field. The pack slowed only
once for caution
with three laps to go, but Stark was never challenged for the win.
Rounding out the top five were Carlyn Voigt, Kevin Kulka, Stephen
Scheel and Jake Wasserburger. Wasserburger also owned quick time on
the night with a lap of 15.659. Heat winners were Falk, Jess
Watters and Matt Klenz while Mike Waddell claimed the semi feature.
In wild and crazy back up action, Bruce Havel of Deerfield took
the win in the 8 lap event. Dave Moore took the early lead until he
found himself stuck behind a lapped car on lap four, handing the
lead over to Havel. Havel streaked to the win followed by Ryan
Oetzel and Jug Hur.
