May 18, 2007; Columbus, WI. -
Rocky Breezer of Poynette led every lap of the 35 lap late model
feature en route to victory on Friday night at Columbus 151
Speedway. Starting from the pole, Breezer took control on the
opening lap and
never looked back. Following Breezer in front was Jerry Auby and
John Wasserburger in second and third respectively. The leaders ran
nose to tail for 20 laps until the only caution flew for a three way
incident involving Wasserburger and other top five runners. This
moved Jason Dunn and Dean Schultz into the top five.
But Breezer and Auby remained first and second and after
restarting, sustained those spots for the remainder of the race.
Dunn and Schultz waged a good battle for the third spot over the
final 15 laps of the contest with Schultz finally gaining the
advantage. At the checkers, the top five were Breezer, Auby,
Schultz, Dunn and Al Weishoff. Taking honors in qualifying was
Steve Dobbratz with a lap of 13.367 while heat winners included Kurt
Clapper and Wasserburger.
Sun Prairie's Dennis Schwark also claimed victory from the pole
position in the 25 lap street stock feature event. Schwark and
Johnny Robinson, Jr led the field to green and the two competitors
battled side by side for the opening three laps with Schwark holding
the slight advantage. Schwark took sole possession of the lead on
lap three with Dan Schmidt following him into second. Lap five saw
the only caution of the event, and on the restart, Dale Weatherwax
charged to the outside of Schwark looking to lead. But Weatherwax
was unable to hold on and began to slide back as Schmidt regained
second followed by Robinson in third. Robinson began experiencing
some mechanical difficulties on lap ten as he dropped back into the
pack and Scott Lawver claimed third. But Schwark and Schmidt were
too strong as they pulled away from the pack and crossed the line
first and second. Lawver, Bret Schmidt and Kevin Anderson rounded
out the top five. Tim
Syvrud set fast time for the street stocks with a lap of 14.007.
Heat winners were Tony Showers and Ed Jackson.
Another beneficiary of a front row starting spot was Gary Pashley
of Marshall as he led all 20 laps of the hobby stock feature.
Pashley took control from Dustin Ward on the first lap and drove
away to the win. The pack ran nose to tail for the majority of the
event while Pashley was showing the way to the checkers. Following
him across the line were Andy Raley, Kyle Stark, Ward and Chet
Paffel. Jim Tate Jr held quick time, turning a lap of 15.276 while
Jamie Dunn took the
heat win.
A wild 18 lap bandit feature ended with Gary Stark of Waunakee
taking home the trophy. Matt Reuter and Phil Denikas made up the
front row at the start while the field stacked up behind them. The
scramble was on as the drivers raced three and four wide for
position. Starting outside of row six, Stark wasted no time
charging to the front, claiming the lead on lap four by passing the
pack on the high side. Following Stark through the field, Kyle
Watters and Sean Watters moved
into second and third respectively. The only caution of the race
flew on lap six. This lined up the leaders for a 12 lap showdown.
Fast qualifier Jake Wasserburger joined the leaders while Kyle
Watters shadowed the Stark. Wasserburger moved into third on lap
ten and went to work on Watters for second. The two drivers battled
for five laps until Wasserburger took the spot on lap 15.
Meanwhile, Stark opened up an advantage and Wasserburger was unable
to run the leader down. At the finish, it was Stark out front
followed by Wasserburger, Kyle Watters, Sean Watters and Stephen
Scheel. As mentioned, Wasserburger set fast time with a lap of
15.741 while heat winners included Stark and Wasserburger.
In wild and crazy back up action, Brodhead's Ryan Oetzel claimed
victory in the 8 lap feature event. Andy Ward took the initial lead
while Oetzel charged into second. Oetzel spent the next five laps
trying to catch Ward. The leaders encountered lapped traffic on lap
six which allowed Oetzel to claim the lead with Bruce Havel
following into second. Havel looked for a way around Oetzel, but
couldn't make the move. At the line, it was Oetzel in first
followed by Havel and Ward.
Joining the festivities at Columbus 151 Speedway was the
Milwaukee Stock Car Association. Bill Schmitz of Mukwanago took the
win in the 15 lap feature event. Starting on the front row, Schmitz
took the early lead with Terry Pulver in second. Schmitz fell to
second on lap five as Pulver found a way around the leader. But
Schmitz stayed on Pulver's rear bumper until the two took the while
flag. Schmitz made a move to the inside on the final lap and took
the victory followed by Pulver and Brian Titel.
Next Friday, May 25, at Columbus 151 Speedway will a full program
in all classes. Time trials begin at 6:30 with racing at 8 pm.
