Schultz takes
Columbus 151 LM Feature
By Jim Remsik Jr |
June 22, 2007; Columbus, WI. -
Dean Schultz of Juneau effectively used the outside groove to win
the Late Model main event after being edge at the line last week and
settling for second.
14 year-old Ross Kenseth (#37) of Spring Valley, IL and former track
champion Scott Patrick (#40) of Sullivan made up the front row of
the 35-lap late model feature event. Patrick jumped out to nearly a
full car-length before Kenseth gathered himself back up and briefly
taking the lead.
The two touched as they battled for the lead on lap two and both
slipped back into the field. Andy Tomlinson (Poynette) sitting in
for John Wasserburger benefited as he was handed the lead. The
caution flag fell on lap 6 when contact between Patrick and Jeff
Falbe (Beaver Dam) in turns one and two caused the field to shuffle
and eventually spit out Kurt Clapper (Dane) and Al Weishoff
(Columbus). The green flag flew for merely one lap before Jerry
Eckhardt (Johnson Creek) spun on the front straightaway with a
little help. Tomlinson brought the field back up to speed on lap 7
with Schultz trying unsuccessfully to run the outside groove. The
extended period of green flag racing and patience on Schultz part
showed dividends on lap 22 as he began to work his way up on the
outside. Steve Dobbratz (Rio) chased Schultz on the outside but got
tangled with Jason Dunn (Sun Prairie) sending Dunn around on lap 33
drawing a caution flag. Schultz secured his win on the restart as
they crossed the line he was followed by Tomlinson, Don Gaserude and
Ron Bishofberger both of Fort Atkinson, and Falbe in fifith.
Jerry Junget of Rio, Rocky Breezer (Poynette) and Bill Gray
(Waunakee) took home first place finishes in the 10-lap heat races.
The semi-feature event sent winner Kurt Clapper and runner-up Bill
Gray (Waunakee) to the Feature. Fast time was set by Steve Dobbratz
of Rio with a 13.383 second lap.
Dennis Schwark of Sun Prairie and Don Trush of Fitchburg brought the
field to the line for 30 laps of Street Stock feature action. Trush
grabbed the whole shot from outside row one and never looked back.
Kevin Anderson (Cottage Grove) found the outside groove but simply
couldn't get around Schwark. Scott Lawver (Roscoe, IL) also found
the outside as Zeke Bishofberger (Fort Atkinson) and Tim Syvrud
(Poynette) made it three wide down the back straightaway, they made
it through turns three and four before Lawver wisely tucked in
behind them. As the field settled into single file Bret Schmidt
(Watertown) tested the outside. Initially falling back with an
inside challenge from Brandon Reidner (Waunakee) he would charge
back by lap 27 to challenge for second place outside of Schwark. At
the line Trush lead by more than a quarter of a lap over Schmidt,
Schwark and Reidner.
Johnny Robinson (Beloit) and Mike Amador (Mazomanie) each won their
respective heat races and Bret Schmidt set fast time on the evening
with a 14.009 second circuit.
Rookie Jamie Dunn (#71) of Sun Prairie and Jarrod Sutherland
(Beloit) lead the 20-lap Hobby Stock Feature to the green flag. Dunn
would hold the early advantage until lap 4 when #86 worked his way
up on the outside and edge her out at the line. Alex Papini tried to
split the leaders as they crossed the start/finish line on lap 7 and
all three found themselves in the wall in the middle of turns one
and two. Trying to avoid the situation landed three other cars,
including Mike Storkson, tangled near the wall on the back
straightaway. With the leaders either not able to continue or being
sent to the rear Mike
Storkson was anointed the new leader. The lap 7 restart placed
Storkson in control of his destiny as Dustin Ward (Beaver Dam)
challenged but was unable to overtake the leader. Following Storkson
and Ward across the line were Gary Pashley (Marshall), Andy Raley
(Fall River), and Jim Tate of Watertown.
Jim Tate scored the lone heat race victory from the back of the pack
of twelve cars after setting a quick time of 15.055.
A wild 18-lap Bandit ended after just 17 laps. As a sign of things
to come caution fell on lap 1 as the field tried to go four-wide on
the back straightaway and sent Kevin Kulka to the pits. On the
restart the outside groove benefited from Kulka's absence as they
moved up a position and Kulka rejoined the field as they took the
green. Tiffany Desjarlais (Columbus) held the lead on lap one but
relinquished it the following circuit to Scotty Hoeft. By lap 5
traffic began to get nasty with drivers pushing and shoving to get
to the front, often moving the opposite direction. Gary Stark
(Waunakee) used the high line effectively and earned the second
position by lap 11 with Kyle Watters following closely. Brian
Paulson (Edgerton) spun on lap 13 but corrected before a caution
fell leaving him just in front of the leaders. Stark found an
opening down low, taking the lead from Hoeft on lap 14 and never
looking back. On lap 17 Hoeft and Watters made contact and Watters
found himself pointed the wrong direction. Without a chance for a
green, white, and checkered finish officials called the
order at lap #17 the final and ushered the cars off the track.
Officially Stark was your winner followed by Kyle Watters, Nate Lecy
(Monona), Steve Privitt (Fall River), and Stephen Scheel of Lake
Mills.
Gary Stark, Kyle Watters, and Chester Ace (Oregon) captured
victories in their heat races. Matt Reuter of Columbus and Scott
Dolphin advanced on to the main event by finishing first and second
in the Bandit semi-feature event. Gary Stark's fastest lap of 15.842
secured his clean sweep on the night.
Considered tame next to that Bandit Feature the 8-lap "Wild & Crazy"
Back-up Feature was fronted by Wayne Hook of Oregon and Jim Remsik
of De Forest. Halfway through lap 1 Remsik cleared Hook and never
looked back. The top two in points Bruce Havel (Deerfield) and
George Wachuta (Brooklyn) fought through traffic and a spinning Andy
Ward (Madison) to take the second and third positions. Remsik
finished first followed by Havel, Wachuta, Dave Moore (McFarland)
and Jug Hur (Madison).
Next Friday, June 29 is a full program in all divisions including
the Wild & Crazy Back-up Cars.
