Wendt A Winner at Columbus 151
By Andrew Schaller

May 10, 2008; Columbus, WI. - Watertown's Andy Wendt took control of the 35 lap late model feature on lap 13 and never looked back en route to his first win of the season.  Starting from the outside of row three, Wendt slid into the
top five and into third by the second lap while Rob Retallick grabbed the initial lead.  On lap four, Jerry Auby, who was shadowing Retallick, moved to the outside of the leader and made the pass to take over the top spot.

Wendt followed Auby around Retallick to claim second with Nick Wendt moving into third.  Wendt sized up Auby and took to the high side on lap 11, clearing Auby two  laps later for the lead.  Nick Wendt battled Auby for second, making the pass on lap 17 to second behind his father.  The only caution of the event slowed the field on lap 19.  On the restart, Nick Wendt began hounding the rear bumper of his father, but Andy Wendt managed to fend him off on the way to the checkers.  Nick Wendt took second followed by Al Weishoff, Ron Bishofberger and Don Gaserude. Gaserude also held down quick time on the night with a lap of 13.353. In earlier heat race action, winners included Retallick and Andy Wendt.

In sportsman action, Brandon Riedner of Waunakee claimed his first feature victory of the season in the 25 lap feature event.  Tiffany Desjarles and Mike Winters made up the front row at the drop of the green.  The two competitors battled for the opening five laps until Winters began to lose traction in the high groove and slide backwards, handing the outright lead to Desjarles.   Riedner took over the second spot, and immediately began to look for a lane around the leader.  On
lap 12, Desjarles slid up the track exiting turn two, allowing Riedner to slide underneath and take the lead with Jim Rohrbeck following into second.  Caution waved on lap 14, bunching the leaders for the restart.  But Riedner was able to maintain his advantage over the field and take the checkers in first.  Rounding out the top five were Rohrbeck, Tim Syvrud, Bret Schmidt and Scott Riedner.  Schmidt was fast qualifier, turning in a lap of 13.850 while heat winners were
Desjarles and Schmidt.

Lincoln Keeser of Johnson Creek took advantage of his front row starting spot to lead every lap of the 20 lap hobby stock feature for the win.  Keeser battled with fellow front row starter Ben Monday until taking control of the top spot on lap 2.  Jim Robinson, coming from row two, made a three wide pass on the outside to pull alongside Keeser.  Robinson began to slip back a bit until regaining his momentum and pulling back beside the leader.  The two drivers battled side by side while the pack lined up behind them.  But with three laps remaining, Robinson tried to make a move and spun to the infield, allowing Larry Moen to take over second and make a bid for the lead. But Keeser proved too strong and held off Moen to take the win. Following Keeser and Moen across the line were Kyle Riedner, Andy Raley and Gary Pashley.  Raley set quick time with a lap of 15.109 while Keeser took the heat race win.

Stoughton's Kyle Watters won his second feature in as many weeks in the 18 lap bandit main event.  Watters, coming from the back of the pack, cruised into the top five in the early laps, moving into third by lap five.  Meanwhile, Richie Henson was pacing the field out front with Tim Draheim in tow.  Watters made quick work of Draheim for second and immediately began stalking the leader.  On lap nine, Watters drove by Henson for the lead and began driving away.  After surviving a late race caution, Watters took the trophy with Michael Clapper, Josh Bisbee, David Schmidt and Carlyn Voigt rounding out the top five.  Clapper owned fast time on the night with a lap of 16.211. Heat winners included Brandon Johnson, Draheim and Watters. In wild and crazy back up action, Jug Her of Waunakee claimed his first win of the season in the 8 lap event.  Her grabbed the lead on the first lap and spent the entire race trying to keep Ryan Oetzel behind him.  As the took the white flag, Oetzel made his move, trying to power past Her on the outside.  The two crossed past the checkers
side by side with Her holding the advantage.  Oetzel took second with Andy Ward third.

Joining the evening's festivities was the Formula Indy Racing Association.  Grant Greenfield made it a clean sweep on the night by winning the 20 lap feature event as well as the heat race.  John Benkert took the early lead on the opening lap as Greenfield sliced his way into second.  Greenfield began to look to the outside of Benkert for the top spot, but Benkert made the low groove stick to maintain his advantage.  On lap six, Greenfield got a good run to motor past the leader and take over the top position.  Greenfield immediately drove out to a large lead as he cruised to the win followed by Vern Brown and Tim Roach.
