May 12, 2001; Sturgeon Bay, WI. - A full week of track work paid off with a perfect track for racing Saturday night at the Door County Speedway. Each division saw new feature winners to highlight week number two.
Shawn Olson took the lead at the start of the modified main, with several cautions plaguing the early going. Last week feature winner, Todd Dart moved through the traffic into second before the final caution appeared on lap 6. Olson took to pit lane during the caution, which put Dart in command. With the green out for the rest of the way, the battle for the lead was excellent. Dart led one lap before Dave Zeitler took over, leading 2 circuits while the pack bunched up behind. Randy LeMieux moved by in turn four on lap 8 with George Henkel taking over the runner up spot 1 lap later. Henkel charged to the front on lap 12 and never looked back, running to his first feature win of the season. LeMieux was strong holding off Zeitler for the number two finish. Chris Derenne came on strong over the final laps to take fourth. Darrell Massart took fifth and Bill LeMieux rounded out the top six. Joe LeBotte led the first three circuits of the Stock Car main before Don Aregoni, Jr moved outside into the lead. Aregonis stay at the front lasted one lap before Scott Pagels took over. After a lap 6 restart, defending division champ, Benji LaCrosse moved into the top spot and began to pull away from the field. A couple cautions during the rest of the race bunched the field several times on the leader. La Crosse was up to each challenge and drove off with his first feature win of the year. The race was good for the runner up spot. Jay Matthias, Josh Massart, Craig Paque, Rick Mahlberg and Shawn Kilgore exchanged spots several times before the final flag which saw Matthias chasing LaCrosse followed by Massart, Kilgore, Paque and Aregoni. After a five year lay off, Kevin Sternard put together a race car for this season. He started the Street Stock main on the pole and quickly pulled into the lead. James Tebon, Marty Beilke, Scott Iverson and Corey Haen pulled right behind. Tebon challenged until a right rear wheel broke on his car on lap 8, putting him out. Iverson made a trip to pit lane to shuffle the front runners. Beilke took up second place with Rick Johnson, Haen and defending champ, Gregg Siebold moving up behind. Sternard held off all challenges to win his first feature since August 3, l996. Beilke was setting up for a last lap run, but the tranny let go on the final lap, dropping him back to fifth in the final string. Siebold took second with Charlie Kroll moving into third ahead of Haen. Keith Kickbush rounded out the top six. Scott Iverson was the point man for the bomber division leading the way for the first half of the race. Following a final caution on lap, Jeremy Wiitila made a move into the top spot and was never challenged the rest of the way, winning his first feature of the season. Reinhardt chased his to the checker followed by Ryan LeMieux, John Knudson, Tracy Koontz and Tom Frea. SUMMARY IMCA MODIFIED IMCA STOCK CAR STREET STOCK BOMBER |
