April 12, 2001; Sturgeon Bay, WI. - Door County Speedway in Sturgeon Bay will have a new pair of promoters to go with its new name this season. Partners and area businessmen Tom Stark and Todd Jensen will co-promote the former ThunderHill Speedway. Stark will do most of the work with sponsors, advertising and public relations, while Jensen handles the day-to-day responsibilities at the track. IMCA modifieds and stock cars return to headline Saturday night shows on the third-mile clay track The 20-race schedule opens on May 5 and runs through September 15. "The IMCA rules are the same everywhere and everyone knows what to expect," Stark said. "1 like the cost and that everybody is on the same playing field using the same tires. "We can race at five different tracks within two hours of Sturgeon
Bay. Modifieds are the hot class around here and the division is growing. I've had four
new drivers who moved up to the modifieds and will be racing here this year." A budget of $100,000 has been earmarked for a new state-of-the-art
lighting system to illuminate the track. Because the "We've found that cars with this type of exhaust are much quieter," Stark said. "Everything straight out the back or to the side is not good. Nobody had any problem with the turndowns at our drivers' meetings." Stark also said that 25 percent of weekly 50/50 drawings will be donated to local nonprofit organizations, such as "Feed My People in Door County," Boy Scouts and Girls Scouts, and snowmobile clubs. Stark is a native of Vinton, IA, where the IMCA mod was introduced, and competed in that .division for nine years. Jensen is also a native Iowan and a veteran racer. Both plan to compete at occasional special events at tracks outside the area, but the most action Stark's car will see this season will be as a promotional vehicle for races at Door County Speedway. "Todd and I are really excited about this. We're both racers and we know how important it is to treat everyone the same and make the racing as fair as possible," Stark said. "You can have all the rules you want, but if you don't enforce the ones you've got, they're no good." The track is part of the John Miles Park complex in Sturgeon Bay, overseen by the Door County Parks and Recreation Board. |
