LeMieux Scores In Mod Action at DCS!
Kilgore Nips LaCrosse for Stocks Victory!
By Dave Panske
June 22, 2002; Sturgeon Bay, WI. - Hopes for a nice night for racing on a Saturday, even with
a threat of rain returning late, literally clouded over as the racing started with a heavy
fog that rolled into the area. Fortunately, it was not dense enough to cause any problems
and the field of 97 cars clicked off a quick program completed by 8:40.
Tony Herbst grabbed the early lead in the modified main followed by Tim
McCormick, Jerry Wenzel, Randy LeMieux and Chris Derenne. A lone caution appeared on lap 4
and Herbst again took the helm on the restart. LeMieux and Derenne moved into second and
third and pressured the leader. LeMieux moved into the top spot on lap 7, with Derenne
following into the runner up spot and the pair started to pull away form the pack. After
the mid point, Derenne took to the high side and challenged for the lead.
They swapped number one until Derenne took over on lap 15. It looked like a cruise from
there, but LeMieux stayed right there and with a couple laps left, started pressuring
inside. Just as the white was displayed, LeMieux was back in the top spot, when
Derennes mount suddenly slowed in turn four and came to rest in turn 1. LeMieux
drove away to his first hometown feature win since August 9, 2000. George Henkel finished
in second with point leader, Dan Ratajczak, coming in third, after starting 17th. Art
Siefert was fourth with Jeremy Jacobs and Dave Zeitler rounding out the top six.
Gary Reinhardt grabbed the lead in the IMCA Stock Car main followed by Jeff Vlies, Jeff
LaCrosse, Rob Gagne, and Tracy Koontz. The pack stayed tight throughout the contest with a
good battle for the lead. Reinhardt kept control of the top spot until LaCrosse slipped
inside on lap 9 to take the point. Vlies and Jon Wolf followed over the next 2 laps before
the lone caution appeared on lap 11.
LaCrosse was still setting the pace with Vlies, and Wolf now joined by Shawn Kilgore,
Larry Karcz, Jr and Pat Davister. The top six cars ran under a blanket with some exciting
racing over the next 6 laps. LaCrosse and Vlies side by side for the lead and the next
four bunched tight behind. Karcz moved outside with Kilgore and moved into third and
fourth. Karcz was shuffled back to fifth and Vlies holding second. Kilgore continued
outside and moved to second on lap 17.
LaCrosse was still holding the lead but as the pair came out of turn 4 for the white
flag, Kilgore got a strong jump off the turn and was the leader at the line. He maintained
the edge over the final lap to win his first feature of the season by a half car length
over LaCrosse. Vlies was able to hold third with Wolf, Karcz and Reinhardt rounding out
the top six.
The Streets were next up and ran flag to flag. B.J. Soquet set the pace for the opening 2
circuits with Aaron Thornton taking charge on lap 3. Troy Muench, Scott Iverson, Mike
Soukup, point leader, Kevin Sternard and Charlie Kroll mixed up the middle of the field.
Thornton and Muench pulled away a bit until the mid point of the race. Sternard moved into
third with Soukup and Iverson behind. Gregg Siebold moved into sixth.
The cars bunched up on the leader, with Thornton holding the top spot. Muench was making a
charge at the leader when the engine expired in his car, putting Sternard into the runner
up spot with 3 laps left. Thornton held off the challenge and won his second feature of
the season with Sternard taking second. Soukup took third with Iverson fourth. Soquet took
fifth and Siebold sixth.
Evan Madden led the opening lap of the Bomber main with Scott Reinhardt taking over on lap
2. Reinhardt opened a lead with Wayne Moore moving into the runner up spot on lap 3. Moore
slowly cut the lead down and challenged to the lead by lap 7. Using the inside line, Moore
took the lead on lap 8 and was able to hold off a determined Reinhardt to post his first
feature win of the season. Madden was able to take third with Joe Hegnet taking fourth
followed by John Knudson, and Ford Malvitz.
